Why:

LaBarge Winery has 17 acres of vineyards, all certified organic, at the western edge of the Sta Rita Hills.  It is in a trendy spot: Pierre can point across a ravine to OLG vineyards where Dave Phinney, creator of The Prisoner, and down the street where Domaine de la Côte have vineyards.

He uses only fruit from his own estate. "The ultimate goal is to learn and know our property as well as possible."  Pierre works by himself to a degree that is very unusual, even for a 1500-case winery.  He does 30 to 35 separate picks of his vineyards to get the grapes at the peak of ripeness, and he is there for every one.

"I made the decision from the onset to never have commercial yeast in here," LaBarge says. "I know it's a buzzword but this is truly native yeast. There's zero manipulation.

These wines are fantastic people....you really have to taste them to understand.  Of course there will be local cheese and live music by Vinny Berry.  The Good Land provides...

How AVAs and vineyard designations on labels increase your enjoyment of wines

Boots in dusty, ultra-fine grained sandy loam defining much of the Lodi AVA, making a direct impact on the sensory qualities of the region's wines.

Let’s start with two questions:

1. What is an AVA?
2. Why are AVAs important?

AVA stands for American Viticultural Area; a concept first established in 1980 by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, or ATF, to recognize places of origins of American wines, which appear on wine labels.

At that time, the ATF—an independent bureau within the United States Department of the Treasury—began receiving and handling petitions for AVAs from regional wine or grape growing organizations across the country. In January 2003, under the provisions of the Homeland Security Act of 2002, the ATF was reorganized and the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) was created to oversee the process of defining officially recognized American Viticultural Areas...

6 Cities With Underrated Wine Bar Scenes

While visiting a wine region in person can provide stunning views and eye-opening experiences, a wine-focused trip doesn’t always have to revolve around vineyards and wineries. Cities, though miles away from where the grapes are grown, make some of the best wine destinations for drinkers eager to explore a wine variety of bottles. Paris, Tokyo, New York City, and Copenhagen are renowned for their bar and restaurant scenes, with deep cellars and pairing menus well-worth traveling for.

5 Regions Where You Can Easily Find Aged Wines

One of wine’s most alluring properties is its ability to evolve over time. While some wines can age incredibly well — like red Burgundy — that doesn’t necessarily mean the older vintages are easy to find. Since these wines are often released young (generally one or two years after harvest), most aged expressions have to be purchased from a private cellar or the buyer has to put in the meticulous work of storing it themselves (resisting the temptation to open the bottle for years and years).
