If you look at the definition of namaskAra -
http://acharya.iitm.ac.in/cgi-bin/dictionary/search.cgi?word=namaskAra

you see that one definition has something to do with something called
'case'

also, what does the abbreviation 'mfn' stand for?

The word, 'case', refers to the function of a word in a sentence; the 'mfn'
refers to the three genders, viz. masculine, feminine and neuter. This
reference indicates that a word can have any of the three genders according
to what it refers to in the sentence. Since you have studied French think of
the analogy of 'beau' vs. 'belle'.
