Difference between ITRANS and keyboard layouts

Namaste,

What is the difference between using ITRANS and Windows/Mac/Linux keyboard layouts.

I presently use Devanagari/Sanskrit keyboard layouts in Windows and Mac. I find the phonetic layouts easier to type.

I know ITRANS was developed before these keyboard mappings came into vogue. But I am curious to know the pros/cons of using one over the other.

I have also noticed that ITRANS seems to be more popular - at least among the people I interact with.
