विषयेन्द्रियसंयोगाद्यत्तदग्रेऽमृतोपमम् |

परिणामे विषमिव तत्सुखं राजसं स्मृतम् ||१८- ३८||

viShyendriyasamyogaadyattadagrEmrutopamam

pariNaame viShamiva tatsukham raajasam smrutam

That happiness from the contact of a sense organ with its object, which in the beginning is like nectar and when it changes is like poison, is considered rajasa.

यदग्रे चानुबन्धे च सुखं मोहनमात्मनः |

निद्रालस्यप्रमादोत्थं तत्तामसमुदाहृतम् ||१८- ३९||

Yadagre chaanubandhe cha sukham mohanamaatmanah

Nidralasyapramaadottham tattaamasamudaahrutam

That happiness which in the beginning and at the end is self deluding and born of sleep, laziness and indifference, is called tamasa.
