त्यजेत्क्षुधार्ता महिला स्वपुत्रं खादेत्क्षुधार्ता भुजगी स्वमण्डम् l 

बुभुक्षितः किं न करोति पापं क्षीणा नरा निष्करुणा भवन्ति ll  - हितोपदेश

bubhukShitah kim na karoti paapam kSheeNaa naraa niShkaruNaa bhavanti ll   - hitopadesha

Afflicted by hunger a woman disowns her son. Afflicted by hunger, a snake eats its own eggs. What all vices a hungry person does not commit? Generally, a hungry person gives up empathy, compassion and kindness.

Probably this is the reason, अन्नदानम् (annadaanam - charity in the form of food) is considered far superior. Because in Lord's creation, there is enough for everybody's needs, but certainly not enough for everybody's greed.
