Afflicted by hunger a woman disowns her son. Afflicted by hunger, a snake eats its own eggs. What all vices a hungry person does not commit? Generally, a hungry person gives up empathy, compassion and kindness.
Probably this is the reason, अन्नदानम् (annadaanam - charity in the form of food) is considered far superior. Because in Lord's creation, there is enough for everybody's needs, but certainly not enough for everybody's greed.
