Dear all,
The ongoing conflict in Syria has killed more than 100,000 people – including 10,000 children – during the past two years.
In all conflicts, women and girls are particularly vulnerable. Women and children account for more than 78 percent of the refugees who have fled Syria. Even in times of peace, it is usually women who look after children, the sick, the injured and the elderly. When emergency strikes, this burden of care can multiply. The vulnerability and responsibilities of women are further increased by the loss of husbands and livelihoods and the need to purchase essential items for family survival.
Every day, thousands of Syrians seek protection, medical care and other urgently-needed aid, mostly in Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Egypt and Iraq and even as far afield as Yemen and Morocco. This year alone, more than 1 million people have fled across Syria's borders.
Many refugees live in overflowing displacement camps (the Zaatari camp in Jordan is now the second largest in the world following Dadaab in Kenya). But the majority – 78 percent – live in urban or rural areas where, having arrived with little or no savings, they battle with rising rental and living costs, and are often forced to take refuge in vacant buildings and makeshift shelters. To alleviate congestion, both in and outside of camps, seven additional camps are being built: five in Turkey and one each in Jordan and Iraq.
