I downloaded the file from firmware and used winzip 12 to open it. But when I open it and click run, I am getting a box that pops up with : Acess Denied! You must have administrator privilege to flash drives.

I am assuming it is the dvds I bought...Memorex DVD+R DL. I didn't realize they were so corrupt. I've ordered some Verbatim. But just in case, does the error message above refer to the DVDs? I tried all 10 in a pack and got the same message each time.

Log it attached. I've been burning discs this past year without problems. On rare occasions after burning a disc the drive might disconnect where Windows can't see the drive. But I restart my PC and it sorts it. That didn't work this time. I also used the Microsoft FixIt program which got Windows to see the drive again. However about half way through burning I get the IO error popup so the burn basically failed. That's happened several times in a row now so I can't seem to burn anything on that drive. Here's a screenshot of the popup.

I had a similar problem years ago and you told me to use VirtualClone Drive and set the I/O interface in ImgBurn to ElbyCDIO (Virtual CloneDrive). I did that for both my writer drives. That solved the problem. But now a year later I've got the same problem again with the same drives.

The error you're getting after a 'retry' (asc 0x30, ascq 0x0C) stands for - "WORM MEDIUM - OVERWRITE ATTEMPTED". That error code isn't meant to apply to optical drives, hence why it has not been added to the lookup in the program and just says 'Unknown' in the log. The ASC 0x30 group is all about incompatible discs though.

I installed the series 7 chipsets is v13.1 driver you mentioned. I burned a disc in each drive. One of the drives worked fine. The other burned the disc but got stuck at 0% when Verifying the disc. I cancelled it and it said "Waiting for Read Thread (Device)". It wouldn't close. Before I ended the process I copied the log here:

Do what? Turn my PC off then on again? I did that and tried to burn a disc and it failed with an I/O error half way through burning. I inserted another disc and it failed immediately with the same issue as soon as it started burning. Log is here:

Is there nothing else I can do? I've installed the series 7 chipsets is v13.1 driver you mentioned and restarted my PC. Same problem. Problem happens with both drives. Restarting my PC every time I get an I/O error/drive disappears, is fine but I'd like to actually get to the root of the problem and fix it. Please help mate.

I also put my Bluray drive inside a spare Windows 8 PC I have which has minimal software installed. So basically there's nothing installed that could interfere with the burning of discs. It was on SPTI. Filter Driver Load order on that only had the Bluray drive mentioned so I figured it would work without problems. I didn't burn at all at first. I ran Microsoft fix it and it said it fixed a problem with the Filter Driver Load Order. How could there be a problem if there's nothing installed apart from the drive?

Anyway after that I burned a few discs OK then I tried to burn another disc and ImgBurn is stuck on "reserving track". It won't let me stop it. Here's the log I copied while it was on reserving track:

Something else strange is that I tried to use the Windows Disc Image Burner and it said the image is too large! Yet the image is only 22.8GB. I notice that in Computer the drive is listed as having 22.5GB available space! Very strange as Windows 7 says 23.3GB. Yet after that I tried to burn with ImgBurn and it worked!

My bios says Sata Mode is AHCI. I'm using just 1 of the Bluray drives now for further testing of this issue. When the drive is connected to a SATA II port with a red SATA II cheap cable I got off Ebay or a high quality cable from Scan I get an IO error or miscompare when Verifying either immediately or after a few burns.

When I connect the cables from that card to the Bluray drive I didn't get any problems (I got no issues after burning 16 discs). Why would I only get problems when using my motherboard's internal SATA ports yet I don't get any issues when using the SATA card?

I also tried using the drive in a another Windows 8 PC I have. That PC has minimal software installed as I only use it for video capture so there was never anything listed in the Filter Driver Load Order other than the Bluray drive. Yet I still had to run Microsoft fix it for it to fix something there before it would burn. Very strange. I was also using a different cable that time and most of the time when I try to start a burn it just gets stuck on "Reserving Track" before it even starts the burn. I could never get it working. What do you think the problem is on that PC? That PC was also running in AHCI mode. I also noticed that in "Computer" the drive (with blank disc in) is listed as having 22.5GB capacity instead of 23.3GB.

Thanks for your help. It seems that updating the firmware fixed the issues for both drives. Very weird as they were working fine the past few months. now I've burned lots of discs on both drives set to SPTI.

I removed the GearASPIWDM which I think was from iTunes. Not sure if the AnyDVD was causing problems but I removed that as well. Note that I don't have AnyDVD open when using ImgBurn. Any idea what the iaStorF is from? I removed that as well.

By removing the filter drivers, iTunes obviously won't be able to burn (and possible not even 'rip') your CDs. By removing the anydvd one you will have stopped that from working too. Your driver version for anydvd seemed like an old one. Just install the current version and you'll be fine. The iastorf one is part of the Intel rapid storage technology driver.

When using ImgBurn, I continue to get these error messages. I have tried multiple suggestions posted on this platform, such as Perform OPC Before Write, setting Layer Break to User Specified 1913760, Buffer size 72, Main 25%, Device 50%. Im still getting these errors. If anyone can help me, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!

1.) don't use the cheap CMC MAG discs. They are the worst out there and cause 50% of the problems here. Try Verbatim DataLife Plus/AZO. Do NOT get the Life Series Verbatim you find in brick and mortar stores. They will be CMC. Although, I don't THINK this will solve your problem, a.) it might and b.) you should avoid the CMC junk to begin with.

3.) the semaphore timeout issue is generally a problem with the USB bridge in your USB drive conflicting with the USB controller on your PC's motherboard. This is what I think is generally causing your problems. Particularly the issue about the drive not being connected. The only solution is to replace the USB burner, replace the USB bridge in the USB burner, or replace the USB controller on your mobo. It's generally easier just to replace entire USB burner than try the other options. Cheaper, too.

Thank you for your response, @dbminter! I am using Verbatim DVD-R disks from BestBuy. I was curious if it I would have better luck with a different external DVD drive. I will try a non-slim version. Thanks for your support. Any other suggestions/knowledge that other folks have to add is greatly appreciated!

Those Verbatim discs you got from Best Buy were the Life Series CMC junk. I forgot to mention you can't find the good Verbatim in brick and mortar stores; you can only find them online. Officedepot.com and Amazon.com have them.

Question for you @dbminter, does it make a difference between the orange vs the purple label Verbatim disks? For reference, these are the ones I purchased. -ca/product/verbatim-4-7gb-16x-dvd-r-disc-spindle-25-pack/12063018 . I have seen identical ones on Amazon, but also have seen the purple label ones for a good cost there too. If I purchase those, do you think it will change my experience?

Those orange ones in the link you posted say Life Series on them, so, yes, they're the CMC junk. You'd have to provide a link to these purple ones you described as I don't know what that necessarily means. As long as it doesn't say Life Series on it and says DataLife Plus or AZO, you're fine.

It will definitely change your experience. You'll have fewer chances for failures if you switch away from CMC. However, with semaphore timeout issues and the like, better media most likely won't help in a case like that. It MAY as the bad media may be causing semaphore timeout issues attempting to burn, but I can't say for certain switching to the good media will help. You'll be better off in the long run, though, with better quality media. They'll last longer than CMC media and have a better chance of playing with other drives and standalone players.

I'd recommend giving the better media a shot, at least. If it does solve the semaphore timeout issue, getting better quality media is definitely a cheaper solution than getting a whole other drive, which may also have a semaphore timeout problem. And, in the long run, you're better off using the higher quality media, over all.

Also @dbminter, if an external DVD drive does not say "slim" is it safe to say it is a half height drive, like you recommend? I never knew what a usb enclosure was, but now I do and that could prove to be very helpful! Any usb enclosure will work?

I've actually only ever bought one slim model drive that did not come new with a PC. It was a USB model sold by Verbatim and it did not say it was slim on the box. You can tell a slim model because they're slim. Slim model drives are about 2.625 inches thick; though they're called half height drives, they actually take put a "full" size bay in a PC case. Half height models are 5.25" thick. I've only ever used this USB model for reading, with a few write tests. So, I can't say how well that drive I got at Office Depot might do for writing as I haven't performed enough or long term tests.

I've never actually bought a USB 2.x enclosure. All enclosures I've had were 3.0, necessary for the BD burners I was putting in them. You'll get by cheaper with a USB 2.x enclosure versus a 3.0, though, so if you don't necessarily need 3.0 for a 3.0 device, you can get by with a 2.x. However, since I've never actually bought a 2.x enclosure, I can't recommend X won't give you grief. Because the problem lies with the ALI USB bridge in the external drive and the USB controller on your motherboard. Without knowing the make/model of both in the devices you have or want to try, I can't guarantee anything will work.
