Two weeks after Hurricane Sandy, 58,000 people in the Rockaways, Long Island and Brooklyn still lack power, and thus heat/hot water.  Great need for volunteers to work on clean up, door-to-door canvassing, and collection/distribution of donations.

*Please email* this list to your community for Sandy Relief projects. Consider joining, and leading, teams from your communities this month. Also posted on Sandy Relief Google Group

This is the latest update of Hurricane Sandy relief projects beginning Friday 11/16/12, compiled by organization, so you can plan or join other projects.  Some are URLs only. Please send your questions about projects to the organizations directly.

**These lists are usually updated late at night or early AM. Some of you wish to plan ahead, we understand. So, plan to be ready with a range of geographic areas and times you can handle, and have an alternate free time plan, since you'll often only get details late PM.

I'd like to recognize Team @Equinox Fitness members, who have already led amazing relief work, and participated on a number of projects.
A team of us from Raven Keyes' Healing Meditation class are also available to provide Reiki treatments on site! Please contact myself or Susan Vitale svita...@gmail.com about including us on projects.

Volunteers are amazing. Be amazing!

Minda

Airbnb, a popular social website for travelers is offering free, temporary housing to New Yorkers displaced by Hurricane Sandy. http://www.travelwithval.com/airbnb-partners-with-nyc-to-house-residents-displaced-by-hurricane-sandy/

FOSTERS NEEDED on Long Island/Uniondale for owned pets of evacuees now sheltering at Mitchel Field. Temporary animal disaster rescue shelter can't stay open forever, so some long-term help is needed to care for beloved pets of those whose homes have been destroyed/damaged and currently have no place to keep their pets. THESE ANIMALS ARE NOT FOR ADOPTION (although there are a few strays being sheltered who DO need permanent homes), just temporary housing with your family until they can be reunited with their Sandy survivor human families in safe long-term housing. If you can care for a dog or cat or other pet, THANK YOU. Please go tohttps://www.facebook.com/groups/463839006993018/

TO REPORT A NEED, TEXT SANDY TO 69866
Note: Please do not include distribution centers; this is for individual (household) needs.
TO OFFER A RESOURCE, TEXT MUTUAL AID TO 69866
Note: Please only text in your resource if you are on-site at an affected area.

Busy day at St Francis De Sale in Rockaway. We could really use volunteers. I know it's the work week, but if you have off and can come lend us a hand, the community would appreciate it. We were really short on volunteers today. But good news is the donations keep coming in and we keep handing them out. Thank you to everyone who comes down!

TRAVEL INFORMATION
Red Hook, St Jacobi Church or 520 Clinton Avenue:  all are accessible by public transportation. We are no longer offer pick ups of volunteers.
To Rockaway: to get to B113, Veggie Island or the church on 100st DO NOT follow the MTA instructions. They are instructing people to take the "A" train to Howard Beach and then take a shuttle bus. The directions below are much quicker less crowded. If anyone is going to any location below 80th street then  follow the MTA directions
Take the "A" train to rockaway blvd. This station is not in rockaway (it can be confusing). It is the stop after 88th street in ozone park, queens.
Take the SOUTHBOUND Q21 or Q53 bus. (It will say the bus is towards rockaway)
Once the bus enters rockaway, it will be on 90th street. they can get off if going to veggie island or continue on the bus to 100th st or 113th street. The last stop is 116th street so if you get lost, you will not be far from our locations.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS:
If you end up on a clean up crew a few suggestions/reminders:
Pack yourself a lunch.
Pack water.
Bring a face mask and sturdy work gloves.

If you happen to end up in a building with a lot of mold or that even smells like mold. Be sure to stop working every 15-20 minutes and get some fresh air even if you are wearing a mask.
Be sure to wear several layers of clothes. It is cold out, sweat + cold = hypothermia. You may not notice it right away but when you stop working if you feel shivers and are disoriented you can be showing the first signs of it. Get warm fast. Pack a thermos of hot tea as well if you can and drink a little bit throughout the day.
PLEASE DO NOT SHOW UP FOR WORK OR DELIVERIES AFTER 4PM. THIS IS FOR YOUR SAFETY AND FOR EVERYONE'S PROTECTION.
Note: if you are asthmatic or have a heart condition you should not do this kind of work. We prefer that you help us with other Occupy Sandy volunteer efforts. There is a lot of dust and debris in this work.

ALERT: Today Friday 11/16, tell Mayor Bloomberg more action is needed for those in need

At Noon TODAY FRIDAY 11/16, in front of City Hall, nurses, doctors, EMTs, and other healthcare professionals will go to the mayor to demand more coordinated action to rebuild our city’s healthcare infrastructure and care for the thousands of people hurting after Hurricane Sandy.

Will you be there? And can you help get other nurses there?

  • WHAT: Tell Mayor Bloomberg about urgent medical needs after the storm
  • WHEN: Friday, Nov. 16, Noon
  • WHERE: In front of City Hall, 260 Broadway, Manhattan, NY
  • FLIER: Nov. 16 City Hall Rally (.pdfAdobe Acrobat Reader required)

Volunteers in the field urgently need supplies and greater help from the federal and city government. These life-saving volunteers have told us themselves that they can’t fill the place of a real community health network, and are asking us to help get clinics, pharmacies and hospitals re-opened.

On Friday, we’re taking a list of those medical needs to Mayor Bloomberg to ask for the City’s help.

New York’s healthcare crisis is still unfolding – and likely to get worse. The response from city, state, and federal officials has been too little and too late. Urgent action and greater coordination are needed to help thousands of people in desperate need.

The storm badly damaged NYC’s healthcare system, and there is currently no Level One Trauma Center below 57th St. in Manhattan. The evacuation of BellevueNYU Langone, and Coney Island Hospitals has left some of our city’s most vulnerable patients forced to look elsewhere for care. Our city is short more than 2,000 hospital beds. We need our city and state officials to do everything in their power to re-open the hospitals as soon as possible.

Other hospitals are slammed with additional patients, and nurses on some units are working without proper staffing or training. All hospitals need to provide adequate staffing and training to deal with the influx of patients. And our city and state officials need to make a real plan to deal with the closing of St. Vincent’s Hospital in 2010.

Thousands of New Yorkers – in Staten Island, the RockawaysConey Island, and beyond – are still stuck in their homes with no heat, no electricity, and urgent (and unattended) medical needs. Many of these people will get worse the longer they go unattended. Children and seniors are especially in need. Access to medication and medical devices is severely limited.

We are asking the Mayor to work with us to get medical care and medications out to the most devastated neighborhoods in the Rockaways, Coney Island and Staten Island, and to re-open services at Bellevue and Coney Island Hospitals on a clear and realistic timeline.

NYSNA is helping to coordinate this action with other frontline relief workers, including Physicians for a National Health ProgramOccupy Sandy, the People’s Medical Relief, and many independent relief volunteers.

This group met with representatives from FEMA on Wednesday night. FEMA told us they would like to help get more resources into the field - but they can't do it without a formal request from the Mayor’s office.

It is late notice but we would like to make a real push to get nurses and our staff to this action. Please do your part today to tell nurses and ask them to come

Dan Lutz and Desma Holcomb from our staff will be coordinating this action. If you have any questions, call Dan at 347.835.3429.
