The equestrian campground is 1.25 miles from the main recreational area and the group campground. Campers may use the group campground for showers between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. Equestrian campground has no dump station. Campers may use the dump station in the main campground but should be advised the road to the main campground is hilly with sharp curves. Proof of negative Coggins test is required. NatureStudy should help the child delight, understand and be intimate withthe outdoor world around him. It provides a basis for real scientificobservation through developing theories and testing them throughobservation and possibly experimentation. It does not need to becomplicated, just look for obvious connections, and your childrenshould start to find some for themselves as they grow in understanding.
(2)It should lead to scientific methods of thinking, accurate observation, careful comparison of results, and the formulation of generalprinciples. It should make the imagination quick to see possibilities,to suggest methods, to devise experiments to test their truth.
(Fromthe same article) "I have no hesitation in challenging science teachersto answer two questions, (1) What is the "Scientific method?" (2) Howhave you, during this year, made your classes work according to the"scientific method?" Not explained it to them, but made them thinkaccurately and critically from individual observations to the ultimateconclusion. Scientific training is not merely to explain how, but todrill in actual use until thought automatically follows the path ofcarefully observing the facts, rigorously comparing the results ofdifferent observations with each other, the imagination reaching outand suggesting fresh possibilities, experiments to test their truth, and finally collecting the fact into a generalization, the generalstatement which we then call a "law" of nature. It is one thing tounderstand how a motor engine works, it is another to drive a car overa bad road or through thick traffic, controlling, stopping, starting, almost automatically. Until your students follow the scientific pathwaythrough the obstacles and difficulties that beset the search aftertruth, and follow this pathway naturally, you have failed to makescience much more to them than a shop filled with cataloguedmerchandise. True, it takes time, but there is nothing in the worldworth having that doesn't take time.....
I like to leave this portion of their journal up to the children. Theycan copy a poem I choose, or not. They can look up another poem theylike better, or not. They can choose some prose selection about theirsubject to copy, or not. If they prefer, they can write out their owndescription of the item in their sketchbook, just so long as they usetheir neatest handwriting.
