Hello! I have an old canon powershot a2300 hd that I would like to use as a webcam (for meetings). There's a A/V output on the device, but on the official Canon website, the EOS WEBCAM UTILITY is not compatible with this model (only with PowerShot G5X Mark II, PowerShot G7X Mark III and PowerShot SX70 HS). So, is there a another way to make it work?
If you google "Do-it-yourself webcam - PC Magazine", there is a quick description of what you need to do to use any digital camera for webcam. If your computer doesn't have a video input, you can buy an inexpensive USB capture device that allows you to hook up the camera to the laptop.

(2) And whether RTSP is streaming in H.264? If GV-NVR/VLC can already connect to Sanyo VCC-HD2300 via RTSP then you can check in GV-NVR/VLC whether Sanyo VCC-HD2300 is streaming MPEG4, MJPEG or H.264 with RTSP.

The schools' technology and security departments would activate the webcam when any of the 2,300 student laptops were reported lost or stolen, Lower Merion School District Superintendent Christopher McGinley said. He posted the letter to parents on the district Web site late Thursday, amid widespread student outrage and the filing of a potential class-action lawsuit alleging wiretap and privacy violations.
Student Blake Robbins and his parents filed the electronic-privacy suit came after an assistant principal at Harriton High School told him the camera had caught him doing something inappropriate at home. Michael Robbins, his father, confirmed with the educator that the school could activate the webcams remotely, the lawsuit said.
The security feature allows district personnel to remotely activate the webcam and take a picture of the user and the computer screen. That information can then be used to track down a laptop that has been reported stolen or missing.
Lower Merion spokesman Doug Young confirmed Friday that the district believes the webcams were only used in isolated instances of reported theft or loss. Nonetheless, a review is underway of both the activations and the policy.

Here's a good idea gone horribly wrong. A Pennsylvania school district supplied 1,800 2,300 students with laptops, which is pretty cool. The laptops came with webcams. At least one school administrator used a webcam to spy on a student at home, which is not cool.
Now that student has filed a class action lawsuit against the school for invasion of privacy. The lawsuit is bouncing around the blogosphere thanks to Boing Boing. According to the complaint, vice principal Lindy Matsko disciplined Harriton High School student Blake Robbins for "improper behavior in his home." Her evidence was a webcam shot from the student's laptop. The complaint doesn't reveal what the "improper behavior" was but I have my suspicions. High school boy + laptop + webcam = trouble.
But spying on them via webcam is a step too far. Students' constitutional rights in a school setting tend to be reduced somewhat, notably in First Amendment cases (though even that's changing). But this invasion of privacy seems impossible to justify, especially given the fact that the invasion was taking place in students' homes.
