Subject: Data community for the San Diego area; workshop planning

Hello San Diego area librarians, information science & data people:

The UC San Diego Library’s data services are rapidly expanding.   One initiative we’re tackling at this time is improving our training curriculum; in the coming months we plan to provide workshops and classes on various tools and processes involved in working with research data.  We would also like to build a regional community of like-minded, data-centric individuals beyond UC San Diego for collaboration, collective skill-building, and maybe commiseration!

We want to gauge interest in this idea of data community building in general and specifically your thoughts about holding a ‘Data Science Training 4 Librarians’ series in late fall - possibly a week of classes on tools like Open Refine, Git/Github, Python, R,and Tableau.

1.      Are you and/or your co-workers interested in developing & participating in a regional ‘Data Science Librarians’ community?

2.      Are you and/or your co-workers interested in participating in a workshop series like this?

3.      Are you and/or your co-workers interested in helping to organize/teach a class during a series like this?

We’ll be better prepared to establish dates, costs, locations etc. for a Fall series once you respond.

If you are interested, please add your name and contact information to the google doc linked below, and we will be in touch.  Perhaps a first step would be an after-work happy hour or dinner somewhere central to most of us, but we welcome suggestions!
