Hi government document librarians,
It was nice to meet you last Spring. I am writing because I wanted to let you know that our administrators determined that San Diego Public Library will eventually transition to becoming a mostly online depository. At present, we only subscribe to three tangible items. I've reached out to Mary Quackenbush to begin discussions about the process. After emailing with Paige Shank from Dallas Public Library, who is in the midst of this, I foresee a really long road ahead of us. If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, please let me know.
Best,
Azalea

Dear Azalea,
I’m really sorry to hear this news, though I doubt anyone on this list is surprised. I hope you can advocate to keep materials relevant to California history, perhaps as part of the California and/or San Diego Heritage collections. I would also keep an eye out for materials with locally created SuDocs, as these are likely to have minimal distribution. (I’ve worked in libraries that designated these as ending in x or wrote them on the item itself in brackets but I have no idea how Gary might have designated them at SDPL.)
Since you’re going to become a mostly online depository, will you be checking for digital surrogates as you weed and send your copies off to be (destructively) scanned and added to one of these collections if they aren’t already there?
Good luck!
Annelise

Hi Annelise,
I will ask our administrators about whether we will retain federal docs specific to our region. I appreciate your and Gary's tips about the locally created SuDocs. I thought our cruise books were assigned these numbers, so I will need to keep my eye out for exceptions. We haven't formed our digital strategy yet, but I would like to add digital surrogates for items we've dropped.
At our last meeting, I heard (and then later saw) of the UCs working with Google and HathiTrust on this project, but we were not invited. Do you know of a person I could reach out to? I'm currently talking with Mary Quackenbush and I can ask her if this is an option for us.
Thank you for your feedback and questions!
