For the rest of the summer my local magic shop is staying open late on
Friday nights. The reason is due to a weekly car show called
"Cruisin' Grand." The name stems from crusing (in the vehicular
sense) and grand because it is on Grand Avenue.

The shop sets out a table to give people a chance to perform. There
is a young lad of 13 who is quite good (we will be buying his DVDs in
5 years!). He sets out a hat for tips, and once I told him that ne
needed to seed the hat he started to rake in the tips.

Last night I was able to crowbar him away from the table (briefly; the
kid's really good and he knows much more than I do) and I did a little
routine I cobbed together. I finished, and he continued with his
stuff. Not too long afterward he took out part of his wad of bills,
and he told me that those people I did my little routine for had put a
dollar in the hat afterward, and he handed me a dollar bill.

This is my very first dollar that I have received for performing
magic, and I had to write about it. I have not yet decided what I am
going to do with this bill.

Thats good that you made your first dallor and it was nice of the kid
to give you it. But i HAVE A QUSTION? did the young man put out his
hat just for him self or was it out there for all magicians who
performed to get tips and split after the night was over with?

He put out the hat for himself only. There is only one table that is
supplied by the owner of the shop. The kid is rather...possessive of
the table. this being said, he is quite good, and with the exception
of myself there was no one else doing anything.

In my opinion, dividing the tips would be problematic as there is no
real set schedule, and to be honest it was something I never thought
about, and to my knowledge this was something that was not done last
year because unlike this year, there was room in the store.

I will not be able to return until the first Friday in June. Assuming
the shop is open (and of late that is not a sure thing), I will see if
I cannot add to the collection of dollars. Or not, as the case may be.
