The lecture was sponsored by the Honest Sid Gerhart Ring 76 of the
International Brotherhood of Magicians. The lecture had Mr. Wilson
reminiscing about his early career, including what it took to finally
convince a television station that a magic television show was
viable. Several videos were shown from his early television days, and
then he proceeded to explain to the audience how some of the more
impressive illusions were accomplished.
However, it was not just Mr. Wilson talking. Several times we were
handed simple items and taught how to do some simple tricks. The most
impressive involved the simplest of items: two corks.
The overall emphasis of the lecture was on magic shows. While this
did not pertain to everyone present, it must be remembered that Mark
Wilson is a stage magician. I will state that were I a performing
magician, and not a mere hobbyist, I would have purchased his Magic
Bingo, especially because of its dramatically reduced price.
My Wilson was also very approachable, and was willing to sign
autographs for as long as people wanted them. He was not at all
pretentious. Ever since I met Lee Asher, I have asked magicians to
sign a playing card for me. Mr. Wilson was willing to sign a simple
playing card for me.
This lecture was also my first visit to Jack's Place, which is the
meeting place of the aforementioned Ring 76. Jack's Place is run by
Jack White. Long time San Diego residents will remember him from his
days as a newscaster for a local television station (I am forced to
admit that I do not remember which one). The two sides of the room
have display cases filled with magic memorabilia as well as vintage
toys. There is also a small collection of transit tokens. The top of
the walls are covered with movie posters from old westerns as well as
magic posters.
After 2 hours it was past 9pm, and it was time for me to hit the
road. I was very glad to have heard about this lecture, and I am
looking forward to the next one.
