Filmmaker Padmarajan, then an employee with AIR was inspired to make his film Thingalazhcha Nalla Divasam from the story Saranalayam, submitted by Sajini Pavithran. says The Hindu .

This movie is all about Janakiamma , who is turning 60 , who is such a loving caring mother of two boys Gopan and Narayanankutty and grandmother of 4 little girls. She lives all by herself in her spacious ancestral home with a maid to take care of her poultry and cows, and how all her dreams shattered when the children decided to send her to an old age home for their selfish motives.

Cowrie shells are popular artifacts used in divination. Divination is the practice of interrupting signs in order to see into the future. Cowrie shells were first used as exchange money to buy slaves in African countries.

Janakiamma is blessed with 2 sons. Elder son Narayanan Kutty who is a central government employee in Bombay , whose wife Ambika holding the same post with 2 lovely girls Sheenu and Meenu. Younger son Gopan is married to Bindu Have 2 girls too and a diseased girl who has a son Venu!

Narayanankutty is more sentimental of the two. Right from day one he was telling Gopan that mother will not live even a day if she leaves the house.On the day they left their mother in the old age home he was drinking non stop and even had a physical fight with Gopan.

Home is very different from the house. The house is made of only bricks and sand where as the Home is full of our childhood memories, Parents dream and the happy and sad occasions and the air is filled with the breath of all people who lived there. Selling a home is like taking away everything from the old people and leaving them lifeless. Padmarajn has given this message so beautifully in this movie.
