Hi Friends,

As Sandy mentioned yesterday, Elinor Steffy was a young adult who grew up in the Quarterly and Yearly Meetings that San Mateo Friends are part of.  Like the majority of young adult Friends of color in our region of California, Elinor's surviving parents are more lightly pigmented than she was - meaning our demographics have changed significantly this year - and not for the better...

It appears to me that someone not seeing Elinor was not the primary cause of her death, but I have personally witnessed several collisions that appeared to be caused by a driver's assumptions about what to look for.  The night my mother hit a car with no headlights, everyone else in the car saw a black car in the dark, but Mom was exiting a gas station - specifically counting headlights because driving in San Jose at night affords too many distractions....  cyclists are hit nearly every day because the drivers responsible weren't expecting to see humans in the city (cars frequently contain humans, but that's changing too - also, the fact that any particular place is legal for cyclists doesn't mean it's a smart place to be - I haven't been hit in almost 20 years)   I suspect that Carl Magruder may be an example of someone on a cycle when someone else was looking exclusively for cars.  Carl was riding a motorcycle, and I think he doesn't remember his crash, so I may be mistaken   (Mom apparently hit an uninsured & unregestered vehicle - which may have been stolen, so the driver never filed a claim with AAA. Because of the low speeds involved, damage to both cars was minimal)

Carl Magruder, who fortunately survived his crash in 2023, also grew up in Sacramento Meeting with white Quaker parents and continues to be an exceptional and needed voice in Pacific Yearly Meeting.

from ABC News -

"Elinor Steffy’s mother, Delcy, said the family is profoundly grieving the loss of their beloved daughter whose light shined brightly and impacted many people.

"Steffy was well known in the local dance community, including at The Torch Club, where her friends said she was a regular on Sundays and recognized for her dance moves.

Abigail Gibson, Steffy's friend, said she brought energy wherever she went and was passionate about dance, the people she taught and the community she built.

"She was just the life of the party everywhere she went," Gibson said. "It was kind of impossible to be in a bad mood around her. She was always moving, always singing, always dancing."

Steffy's family is working to establish a nonprofit in her name to ensure her legacy continues, according to her friends.

The family has set up a GoFundMe to raise money for the nonprofit, which they said will support dance education, master classes, workshops and cultural exchange experiences for Sacramento youth.

Elijah Weber, another friend, said the plans are still taking shape.

"Everything is still all in the works. This is all very sudden, but right now we're trying to contribute all community funds to further her legacy, especially in the arts, specifically with dance and children, kind of furthering the love that she loved to give to everyone," Weber said.

....

Preliminary findings indicate alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the crash, though the crash's cause remains under investigation, police said.

"Before we release a cause or before we release information about the accident, we want to make sure that we have looked at everything," Bates said. "Unfortunately, in a fatal collision, that means sometimes weeks and weeks, sometimes even months of work checking every possible angle and gathering all the information that we can get.
