ENCINITAS, CA — A bicyclist was seriously injured after being struck by a car on New Year's Day in Encinitas, authorities said.

The crash happened shortly before 6 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Encinitas Boulevard and Cerro Street, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Office.

"A preliminary investigation shows that a 79-year-old woman driving a Hyundai Elantra was driving eastbound on Encinitas Boulevard and collided with a bicyclist just east of Cerro Street," Sgt. Jeremy Collis said.

The 45-year-old male bicyclist was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, Collis said.

The cause of the crash was under investigation. Alcohol or drugs were not believed to be factors in the collision.
