What's Coming Up?
Over the next month, crews will:
-
Finish installing temporary signs, guiding barriers, and striping, as well as remove the existing pavement to construct new medians on Imperial Avenue between 40th and 45th streets. The bike path will be temporarily removed and symbols guiding drivers to share the road with bikes will be painted on the open westbound lane. There will be an available bike detour for those who want to avoid the construction zone on westbound Imperial Avenue which will go south on 45th Avenue to Ocean View Boulevard and then north on 40th Street to get back to Imperial Avenue.

Continue to remove the existing sidewalk and build new curbs & gutters between Francis Street and 36th Street.

Begin to put in lighting between Francis Street and 36th Street as well as form and pour a concrete barrier that will help control traffic flow and separate lanes.
Please be Work Zone Alert, follow all posted signage, and be aware of new traffic set-ups.

How Might This Affect You?
- Nearby residents, businesses, and travelers can expect intermittent noise (including OSHA-required back-up alarms) and lights as our crews complete this work. We will take steps to minimize impacts to the community wherever possible.

What Happened in August and September?

On Imperial Avenue between Gillette Street and 36th Street, crews built a new retaining wall on the north side of the road.

Crews closed Imperial Avenue between Francis and 36th Street to set up traffic barriers and construction area signs. New temporary chain link fences were also installed along 36th Street between Imperial Avenue and Durant Street to protect the construction equipment area.

Preparations to construct a new retaining wall continued.

Finally, crews placed concrete that will allow drains to be cleaned during storms at Imperial Avenue and 36th Street.
Please note that crews closed Imperial Avenue to all vehicle traffic between 36th Street and Gillette Street to accommodate the construction of the retaining wall. This closure is anticipated to last through 2024. During this closure, people driving will be detoured to Ocean View Boulevard via 32nd Street and 36th Street.
Construction schedules are subject to change.

 ABOUT THE PROJECT
|
The Imperial Avenue Bikeway will help create safer streets for people who walk, bike, drive, and take transit in the Southeastern San Diego community. The 3.5-mile bikeway will provide improvements along Imperial Avenue between 17th Street and 47th Street. Proposed features of the Imperial Avenue Bikeway include high-visibility crosswalks, curb extensions, separated and buffered bike lanes, shared lane markings, and other street improvements that will increase safety for all roadway users.
