Hi guys,

I am new to the group and I am surprised that there is not a whole lot
of stuff going on here.
When was the last meeting, and is this group still active?

Thank you!!!

Kai,

You're correct that the book club is completely inactive now. The organizer (Anne) moved to Austin and people's schedules had been an issue for awhile before that.  I'm sure if someone enthusiastic wanted to try and organize more meetings, and track down a few attendees I'm sure it could be resurrected.

Hi Ryan,

thank you for answering. That is rather sad to see a group falling
apart just
because the organizer moved away.

It looked like that this group was on the right track long before the
"real" IT
world knew what would hit them ...

What I am talking about is the fact that people today are trying to
deal with things
that you all were preparing for: the coming of the functional
languages.
That is also what my group is all about; Erlang, another great
functional language,

So, what do you say if we were trying to resurrect this group?

Kai,

I myself do not have much free time to resurrect the group (likely will change in the future), if you want to give it a try and organize get some people together and go for it, I'll attend. Pick a book, pick a meeting time drum up some interest and see how it goes.

Hi Ryan,

I am in contact with Anne, who was/is in charge of the group.
I hope that she'll nominate me as her successor and that I'll be keeping
this great group together.

My book suggestion would be the newly released book from PragProg.com;

Seven Languages in Seven Weeks

Any takers?

Hi all, Kai expressed interest in managing the group, so I'm
officially passing the torch. If anyone else would like to help Kai
out speak up; I'm sure the help would be appreciated.

Invite me to all your Christmas parties (kidding!) and see you all at
the Texas code camps and such! ;)

I'm willing to give it another go and help however I can. Lead us
Kai.

New Horizons is open to hosting. They have said so in the past. Or
we can do skype or coffee shop like in the past.

Eager to read that book too.

Kai,

Welcome to leadership :) Seven Languages in Seven Weeks would be a
good one.

However, I'd like to throw in http://pragprog.com/titles/trevan/driving-technical-change

1) it's only 200 pages (good starter material for the group coming
back together) versus 300 for 7 in 7
2) I know a couple of us in the group have especially bad runs trying
to drive technical change as of late.
3) I bought it last week and I am selfish.

Regardless 7 in 7 I'm sure will be fun.
