Hi all, just a friendly reminder that ONE WEEK from tomorrow, Tuesday,
10/6 at 7:00 is the next book club meeting.  We'll be discussing the
second half of Chapter 14 in the DDD book.

Anyone that is new to Skype, try to get on a few minutes early so we
can work out any technical problems beforehand.  If you haven't done a
voice chat using your computer before, make sure you have sound and a
mic, and if you're planning on using speakers(on a laptop or
otherwise), keep a pair of headphones handy as a backup as sometimes
speakers cause echo with these programs (really, headphones would be
preferable).  Headphones with a built-in mic would be ideal.

My Skype ID is ajepst, and I'll be creating/running the conference.
IM me on Skype once you're online to let me know that you want to be
part of the conference and I'll add you in.

Anne:

Did we talk about meeting in-person this time at New Horizons vs. doing it on Skype? I could obviously be wrong on that. I believe we can get more value if we meet in person.

Phil: Any luck in talking to your contact at New Horizons for arranging a room on 10/6?

Thanks
Jas

Happy to meet in person if I can (having beer present will help :) ) but usually with the kids at that time so all I ask us that there be a web cam streaming of the meeting say via ustream.tv. Can set up particulars with anyone interested.

BTW - Haskell is renewing my love for developing. Great pick, folks!

Go for it Robert, that will be cool. I can bring beer but not sure how New Horizons will feel about it. When meeting for SARuby (not in New Horizons), we did that one time.

I believe we talked about meeting in-person for the upcoming Haskell meeting, on October 20th at 6:00pm.  If I recall, people were thinking that the convenience of having whiteboard and computer screens at the ready would be extra worthwhile for the language discussions, and would make it worth any extra inconvenience that coming to an in-person meeting might be.

We could certainly try to meet in-person for the DDD meeting on 10/6 as well if people are up for it, and I think meeting in-person has a lot of value.  But....that's two in-person meetings in a row.  it may be worth noting that one of the reasons we moved online was people were finding it really tough to make it to an in-person meeting twice monthly...a few meetings in after the group started up, we hit something like 2 meetings going by with nobody able to make it in-person. We moved to skype and had a lot more success getting enough people and keeping the club viable.  But if we do want to consider moving to a significantly heavier balance of in-person meetings, are we going to get enough coming regularly? I prefer in-person, but I also prefer online to a meeting that doesn't happen at all.

Ah, didn't realize this was the DDD session. Oh well, either works for me.
