So I've gotten a suggestion for tinychat - anyone used it/have any idea how it is in practice compared to Skype? Or, anything else/similar?

Was thinking something more on the "chat room" model rather than the "conference call" model could be better for the group -major benefit would be not having to depend on a "leader" person to start the chat, also, if, like today, the person (in today's case, me) new people are told to contact is a little late, they might be concerned they have the information wrong or something...and if they don't know anyone else to contact, they might get left out. Could be other/better solutions than this though. Maybe, just having one or two others whose skype ids get stuck into the email I send out beforehand alongside mine would solve all potential problems. :)

I really like Skype for group chats - the person starting one can add
people and the chat never need go away. A dev team I was on used such
a chat for over three years straight.

When someone gets Google group membership could add them to the chat
"room" - it could stay open during non mtg times, too, and become a
"club room" of sorts.

Never used the calling features of Skype until tonight though!!

Not that I have been involved but you might want to consider CampFire.  There is a free license for 4 simultaneous chatters.  What that translates too is if you have around 8 people in a chat room 4 would have to be chatting at the same time.  The benefits to this is that you have a log of what has been said which is really valuable for a book club. AND you can upload files.

Didn't know about this chat room/group feature, that sounds like a low-transition way to solve the problem!  (have I ever said I was a skype expert? I sure hope not, because that would have been a big fat LIE,- I'm lucky I figured out how to put my picture in it :D )

Of course, if campfire isso super awesome that we're losing out big by not using it.... ? well, I've never used it, so I have no data there myself.

Here's my proposal: let's see see how this skype group feature works out for us. - If that is proving inadequate in some way (see, I left that completely vague and open), then we can look into something else. Feel free to argue against this suggestion.
