Sorting by Year

Looking to sort works by year in Hyrax. What is the best way to accomplish this?

1. By creating a new field for the work form and sorting on that? (ex., Pub Date - 1972)

     How would you apply this change to works already created, by changing the schema and

      running migrate or by re-indexing all of SOLR?

2. By using an already existing field in the work form and then batch processing the data in 

     the field? As long as the field is not a multivariable field and then re-indexing, or would 

     you not have to re-index in that case and sorting by facet? 

3. Some other way..?
