Hello Everyone,

Following the conclusion of the most recent sprint undertaken by the
Component Maintenance Working Group [1], a question arose as to
whether or not the core component om [2] continues to fulfill the
requirements of a Samvera project (specifically, the use requirements
[3]). As some Samvera contributors may be aware, the om Gem is no
longer a core dependency of hydra-works [4], neither is it used in
hydra-file_characterization, hydra-head, nor active_fedora.

However, it was discovered that the Gem remains a dependency for the
Gem solr_ead [5], which itself is used by the ArcLight project [6].
In response to this, we would like to please put forth a proposal to
deprecate om, but with the added request of looking to please move
this Gem to the Project Blacklight GitHub organization [7] (instead of
samvera-deprecated).

As with previous proposals for deprecation, we welcome any concerns or
questions regarding this matter on this thread (or, on Slack in the
#component-maintenance Channel). If there are no objections, we hope
to see the deprecation completed by September 3, 2019.

Thank you for your attention,

James Griffin
on behalf of the Component Maintenance Working Group

James-

ArcLight plans to rewrite their indexing tooling to avoid using solr_ead, solrizer, and om, all of which are on track to being deprecated: https://github.com/sul-dlss/arclight/issues/528 (this ticket was given the highest priority in the sprint planning for the upcoming community sprints).

So I think just deprecating om and moving it to the samvera-deprecated organization is the best thing to do here.

Esmé,

Thanks for the info. I don't know of anyone else using solr_ead, so this all sounds like a good plan to me.

Adam,

GitHub added a handy "Used by" button which lists dependents, if you haven't seen it. Here's the link for solr_ead: https://github.com/awead/solr_ead/network/dependents  which is obviously mostly arclight projects. The NYU Libraries one looks like it might not be strictly Arclight.

Ryan,

Thanks! I had no idea about that. I knew the NYU folks were looking at solr_ead a while back, but didn't hear anything further.

Thank you very much for these responses Esmé, Adam, and Ryan (I was unaware that so many were already developing ArcLight implementations).

I will be certain to aim towards deprecating om within the samvera-deprecated Organization, given the labor scoped for https://github.com/sul-dlss/arclight/issues/528.  I look forward to learning more about these steps forward from the ArcLight community.

Sincerely,
James

Hi all,

I'm not sure who from NYU might be on this list, but regarding their finding aids site and indexer, I'd suggest reaching out to Barnaby Alter.

Cheers,
Mark

Hello Everyone,

Thank you again for all feedback, as well for all of those who assisted with the process of completing the deprecation of om as a Core Component.  Following the successful migration to the Traject Gem [1] for ArcLight [2], the Gem has been transferred to https://github.com/samvera-deprecated/om.

Should there be any questions or concerns following this deprecation, please freely contact either myself, or other members of the Component Maintenance Working Group.

Sincerely,
