Samvera Connect 2022 Online is October 24th - 27th, from 11:00 AM EDT - 2:30 PM EDT. We're excited to announce that our keynote speaker this year is Michael C. Frank, the David and Lucile Packard Professor of Human Biology at Stanford University and Director of the Symbolic Systems Program. His keynote is titled "Using domain-specific data repositories to study children's development with big(ger) data."

New this year: Birds of a Feather conversation groups

Join other conference attendees and a volunteer facilitator for interactive, unconference-style conversation sessions. We need volunteers to facilitate sessions on hot topics, challenges, or burning questions you'd like to talk through with others in the open repository ecosystem. Sign up here to facilitate a session. Anyone in the Community is welcome to facilitate.

2 – Deadline Sept. 30th to submit poster and lightning talks for Samvera Connect 2022 Online

There is also still time to submit lightning talks and online posters for Connect through September 30th. Details about these talks will be added to the schedule in early October.

Your participation makes this a great event each year, so we hope you'll join us in October!

3 – Samvera Research Data Survey

Samvera Partners are looking for input from the community to help us understand different organizational research data repository application needs. Your responses will help the Samvera community better understand community needs and help us direct resources to improve Hyrax and Hyku software products.

This is a short survey, participants can expect the survey to take less than ten minutes. The survey questions are intentionally left open-ended because we want you to have the opportunity to provide information that is specific to your organization's unique needs. We encourage you to be succinct, while also providing as much information as you think is relevant to help us better understand your organization's needs.

4 – 2022 Julie Allinson Award Recipient

It is our great pleasure to announce that the recipient of the 2022 Julie Allinson Award is tamsin johnson from University of California, Santa Barbara.

tamsin was jointly nominated by Julie Hardesty (Indiana University), Jessica Hilt (University of California, San Diego), and Chrissy Rissmeyer (University of California, Santa Barbara). In their nomination letter, they nominated tamsin for the award “in recognition of their outstanding technical leadership, mentorship, and tireless efforts in addressing and raising awareness about issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion in our community.”

They also highlighted that tamsin is “generous with their knowledge, always willing to pair with new and existing members of the Samvera Community. They are patient with new contributors, encouraging members to take tickets that are outside their comfort zone with the offer of support and education throughout the process.”

The letter ends by noting that “the efforts of one person can truly make a difference. Julie Allinson was one such individual and tamsin johnson is as well.”

Congratulations tamsin, and thank you for your outstanding and continuing contributions to the Samvera Community!

5 – Nominations are open for the Samvera Board

The nomination period is now open for candidates to stand for the Samvera Board elections. Nominations are open until 8pm EDT on October 21st, 2022. To enter a nomination, just fill out the short Samvera Board Nomination Form.

Samvera Board members serve with rolling term dates, so that every year there is an election to fill three at-large seats. Those elected will serve a three year term January 1, 2023 - December 31, 2026.

Anyone is welcome to nominate a colleague. If you are impressed by the leadership qualities of one of your Community colleagues, please nominate them to the Board. If you are willing to share your leadership skills with the Samvera Community and you are part of a Partner organization, please nominate yourself.  I'll reach out to all potential nominees, so no one will see their name on the ballot by surprise.

Nominees must be from a Partner organization. Organizations may not have more than one representative on the Board so nominations will not be accepted for individuals at institutions which already have an existing Board member serving in 2023 (Emory University, Princeton University, Tufts University, University of Michigan, University of Utah, Washington University St. Louis).

Please review the 2023 election page for complete information about nominations, the Samvera Board, and the full election timeline.

To enter a nomination, just fill out the short Samvera Board Nomination Form.

6 – Samvera Metadata Interest Group co-facilitator opportunity

The Samvera Metadata Interest Group (SMIG) is in search of a co-facilitator!

Facilitator responsibilities include:

  • Scheduling monthly meetings and preparing agendas

  • Commissioning working groups and specific initiatives as needed

  • Reporting to the community at Connect/Virtual Connect meetings, or sending an update

One new facilitator is in place, but a co-facilitator is a great help to the work of this Group. This role would be a one year commitment, beginning after Samvera Connect in October. If you’re interested and would like to discuss further, please contact the current co-facilitators, Anna Goslen (gos...@email.unc.edu) and Nora Zimmerman (zimm...@lafayette.edu). Thank you!
