Dear list members,

Lesson 12 of Maurer's The Sanskrit Language has this sentence.

कतिपयास् तु पारं प्रतिकूलं भुजैस् तीर्त्वा परिश्रान्ताः प्रत्यागम्य तीरे

 न्यग्रोधपादपछायायां स्वपन्ति ।

A few having swum with their arms to the other shore in the opposite direction, have returned tired, sleep in the shade of the banyan tree on the shore.

For कतिपय , Apte has in his dictionarकतिपय a. [कति-अयच् पुक् च] Some, several, a certain number;  . . .

I.e. he's says , katipaya is formed from kati + the affixes  p and aya .

But the affixes p and aya are used to form causative verb forms. Is that mere coincidence or is their some reason  the adjective katipaya  ends in a form usually used to form the causative verb stem.

Thanks,

Harry Spier
