Dear list members,
When I look in the sanskrit dictionaries, the root of भरति is listed as भृ  but the root of चरति is listed as  चर् . Why is the root of  चरति  listed in Guna grade but the root of  भरति listed in zero grade?
Thanks,
Harry Spier

Dear Harry,
The imagination of root in SaMskr̥ta based on the usage in the learned group (Śishṭa-loka). There is usage of 'Bhr̥' (like in Bhr̥ta or Bhr̥tya) but there is no usage like 'Cr̥'. So, Paṇini and other grammarians did not list the dhātu like 'Cr̥'. This is my observation. I welcome your or anyone's observation as well.
Thank you

With best regards
Bhaṇḍāru Rājeśvara Rāv

So, the above is the reason for  listing 'Ca' in Guna grade.
Thank you.

I have a hypothesis that the sanskrit language is like chemistry where the Paninian Sutras act as the rules for the formation of 'chemical bonds' between the Dhatus (Samas) and turning the Dhatus into action words (molecules) and the whole of Ganapath is like the periodic table akin to Actinide and Lanthanide series. The only proof I have for this is the reason why they are called 'Dhatus' because Dhatu is also used for elements in Ancient Hindu chemistry. I think ancient grammarians imagined that sanskrit words were actually real and they where fundamental building blocks of the metaphysical universe from which the Vedas and the Puranas have come. And therefore the reason why we have चर् and not च्ऋ is because no one has yet 'seen' one in the metaphysical realm.
