Dear all,

Several years back I had developed a java app. which outputs the name of a Sanskrit metrical structure if a quarter of any Sanskrit verse in Roman characters as per Baraha convention is input. A software expert Mr.Venkatesh nsvnar...@gmail.com whom I got in touch with through this [Samskrita] group has been kind enough to convert it into an executable app in Windows. This file is now available at

http://www.mediafire.com/?p21y045io80il5o

Those interested may download it and use.

Feedback could be given to me at murt...@gmail.com

Regards

Murthy

I tried this with the following selection of verses:

मन्दाक्रान्ता A vaarNika meter. 17 syllables.

स्वागता A vaarNika meter. 11 syllables.

पञ्चचामर A vaarNika meter. 16 syllables.

मदिरा A vaarNika meter. 22 syllables.

A matrika meter. 16 matras in each quarter, divided into 4 matraganas of 4 matras each.

A vaarNika meter. 11/12 syllables in alternate quarters.

I got the right answer only for the well-known मन्दाक्रान्ता.  The program failed for all the rest.  Why is that so?

The following are the names of metres the program identifies:

"gajagatih","pramaaNikaa","maaNavakaM","bhujagaSiSubhRutaa","bhujamgasamgataa",

      "maNimadhyaM","tvaritagatih","mattaa","dodhakaM","bhramaravilasitaM","campakamaalaa","indravajraa","upendravajraa","Saalinee","stree",

        "rathoddhataa","vamSastha","indravamSaa","drutavilambitam","kusumavicitraa","vaiSvadevee",

            "taamarasam","bhuja~Ggaprayaatam","sragviNee","priyamvadaa","maNimaalaa",

            "lalitaa","praharShiNee","ma~JjubhaaShiNee","praharaNakalikaa","vasantatilakaa",

            "maalinee","SikhariNee","mandaakraantaa","pRuthvee","SaarduulavikreeDitam",

            "deSikadayaapUrvaardha","deSikadayaa_uttaraardha"

You will see in the above list some metres used by poets but not listed in "Vruttaratnaakara". I have given some adhoc names to them tagged on to the name of the poet. The program also recognizes Anushtup and Aryaa.

Murthy

For those interested in prosody, the site http://sanskrit.sai.uni-heidelberg.de/Chanda/HTML/list_all.html is a very good resource.  They have a database, as of today, of 1352 meters.  When you enter the sequence of syllables in a quarter of a verse in the 'laghu-guru' order following the Kyoto-Harvard convention, it identifies the meter.

Its limitation appears to be that it works only for akSharagaNavrittas and not for maatraagaNavRittas.

While several old and new books in various languages are available for those interested in prosody, I find that the Hindi book 'ChaandaPrabhaakara' by Jagannath Prasad 'Bhanu' is very comprehensive and user-friendly.  It is available at the DLI site.
