Respected members,
I am working on a Devanagari keyboard for mobile devices. For graphics purpose I need a non-unicode Sanskrit font which have all the Devanagari symbols including ऒ, ॊ, ऎ, ॆ, ः, ृ, ॄ, ऋ, ॠ, ॢ, ॣ, ऌ, ॡ, ॒, ॑, ॓, ॔, ॐ, ॥, ऽ. I checked lot of fonts like Sanskrit 99, Krutidev etc but none of them contains all of the above symbols. Lot of Unicode fonts with above symbols are there but they can't be used in graphics programs like Photoshop as it does not support Unicode, that's why I need non-unicode font.

Also is there any font which have all vedic Sanskrit characters/symbols? I wonder which font the publishers of Sanskrit books use for such ancient symbols.

For the Vedic Symbols, You can use Sanskrit2003 font.

I suppose, Chandas also has the Vedic symbols in it.

Hi,

Please refer to e-nagari OT from the Indolipi Package.

It has all the necessary half-forms, vowel signs, Samyuktasharas etc in the Private Use Area of the font.

(You can access the PUA using Character Map or Insert Symbol facility in MS Word)

Code2000 font also has the necessary character in the PUA. You may want to try it out too.

Benjwal,

I can't speak for Photoshop, but an old legacy font that I have used is xdvng.

You can find more information here: http://sanskritdocuments.org/processing_tools_fonts/

Anyway, you can always capture a unicode script as a graphic?

Best wishes,

Eddie

My graphics project is already in Photoshop so I can't use any other tool. I have tried following fonts, none of them contains above symbols.

Sanskrit 98, 99
xdvng
Krutidev

Benjwal,

Just about all of those signs are there, including those joined signs which can also be used stand-alone. Though they are without the dotted circle symbol, if that is important.

No dotted circle is not important. I could not find following symbols in its character map,
ऒ, ॊ, ऎ, ॆ, ॒, ॑ (rest are there)
Are above symbols included in the font? For the first four only is sufficient, it can be appended to to form , with to form , with to form

Also is there any IME (Input Method Editor) available for this font? Without that typing is difficult.

Chandas fonts should provide the vedic symbols.

Samples of fonts are here:

Yourself can verify whether they are suitable for your purpose.

In Itrans too I have found the vedic symbols, but they do not have unicode support (for some).

Baraha IME has also got the following encoding for in put:

@ = (anudatta)

# = (udatta)

$ = (swarita)

#f1; = ñ (gu)

#f2; = ò (ggu)

#f3; = ó (gM)

#f3;#e8;= óè (gM)

which is meant for typing in any page.

The Baraha IME can be stand alone application can be downloaded from this rapidshare link:

Baraha_IME.zip

Hope it can be used in Photo shop too. I have not tried.

Benjwal,

For Vedic signs, and for data entry (typing) etc., you might want to
explore BablePad and its included BabelMap (see below).

As its name suggests, it's somewhat overkill for your purposes, but it
does give all those Vedic signs that you need.

As well as Unicode it accepts ASCII encodings - and convertion to and
from legacy (ASCII) and Unicode (UTF-8) encoding schemes.

Other Indic scripts are included.

Text can be saved as graphics . . .

And its free.

Benjwal,

It would appear that Photoshop does indeed support unicode characters.
There is a (long) discussion on this matter (viz.Tamil text) which may
be of interest: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/544712

Put basically, you install the required unicode font, then type in the
full unicode code point as a number.

U+0946 DEVANAGARI VOWEL SIGN SHORT E
U+094A DEVANAGARI VOWEL SIGN SHORT O

Which approach you use depends on how much typing is involved, I
suppose - if it's not too much, perhaps an expert can do a quick job
for you.

Best wishes,

Eddie,
