Dear Group,

Intrigued by the word 'Shatavadhani' in Shatavadhani Dr. R Ganesh in
the above postings, I checked up Wikipedia and came up with the
following: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avadhanam

This is something that is almost unknown in other parts of India. I
had never heard of this earlier, though 'aShTaavadhaanI' is a common
word in Marathi, meaning 'someone who very conscious of the happenings
around him, a multi-tasker in modern parlance.

Have other members of the Group any experience of similar
performances?

Many years ago I knew a Cost Accountant whose name was Avadhani.  I do not
remember his full name.  He was from near Udupi and was a Brahmin.

Some time ago I had watched a Ashtavadhana programme held in our institute.

The subjects paid to attention vary differently also. One of them I remember is one of the पृच्छक-s used to sound a ताल at intervals and when others used draw his attention to different topics, such as composition of verse with given restrictions laid by each. The avadhani will be answering them in clockwise  in order of the questions asked. When the turn of the person rigning the bell, he will be saying how many times he has rang the cymbal. It was very interesting too.

The mind according to Nyayashastra, the मनः is अणुप्रमाण and it is practically impossible to pay attention to different thing at a time. The mind has to come into contact with each विषय to have cognintion of the thing. It can come be related with one thing and then with another and so on. In case of doing multiple things at a time, such as reading book, singing another song, doing something with the hands etc. It is moving so quick from one to another that the order is not visible to us and we think all the things are done simultaneously. Here the training can increase this capacity of the mind infinitely as we can witness with the avadhana programmes and also memory power is the asset for the programme as I have seen.

Anyhow, I could not understand what is meant on Bhagavadgita avadhana programme in the list. May be the poetry limited to the verses of Bhagavadgita. In the avadhana programmes as given in the web page, the verses are composed then and there. Anyhow very terrible achievement of human mind.

I remember some parts of an Ashtavadhana telecast in Doordarshan TV, probably almost 30 years ago. Dont remember the name of the person...  It was a humbling show and raw display of minds capabilities.

But the avadhaani did the following things among several others:

1. Untie a complicated threaded knot in hand, all the while answering others
2. Construct a magic square or some math stuff (a person used to write on board)
3. Remember verses from Thirukkural given the number (from a total of 1330 kurals)
4. Say some poems/shloka or couplet backwards
5. Recall the name of the poet given a poem from Tamil literature.
6. Counting of a random bell ringing

thats about what i can remember...

Sanskrit and Kannada avadhana programmes are organised fairly frequently in Bangalore.  I went to one a couple of years ago and described it in an article here: http://venetiaansell.wordpress.com/2009/06/11/a-modern-day-ashtavadhanam/
Dr Ganesh is I think acknowledged to be the best at least around here - and can face 100 questioners - but there are others who perform as well.

Absolutely incredible talent demonstration for social motivation.  Such benevolence is missing in today's society.
