Dear list members,
Verse 3,51,16 of the नलोपाख्यानम् is

 03051016a शस्त्रेण निधनं काले ये गच्छन्त्य अपराङ्मुखाः

03051016c अयं लोको ऽक्षयस् तेषां यथैव मम कामधुक्

From what words is अपराङ्मुखाः formed.  Is it some kind of irregular compound formed from अपराग  + मुख with the final a dropped from अपराग ?

Thanks,
Harry Spier

(neg.)
पराक् - adverb - outwards, towards the outer world, away, off

It's अ + पराङ्मुखः.........पराङ्मुखः means turning the face ( not facing the situation) ......... अपराङ्ग्मुख means not turning ur back.......facing straight..... particularly facing the situation..... that's नञ् तत्पुरुष समास।

1) I thought  अपराङ्मुखाः in Nala (Mbh 3,41,16a) शस्त्रेण निधनं काले ये गच्छन्त्य अपराङ्मुखाः  was a bahuvrīhi compound.  I.e. Those, who fighting without averting their faces at the time go to their death by the sword.

2) How do you analyse the whole compound and its parts.
a) Is अपराङ्मुखाः a bahuvrīhi or a tat-puruṣa (as  Swarnagauri Munagekar wrote) ?
b) Within the compound, is Is पराङ् from पर + अञ्च् a karmadhāraya ?
c) Within the compound, is अपराङ् from + पराञ्च् an avyayībhāva ?

Thanks,
