Dear scholors Namo namah,

My father has been doing valmiki Ramayana parayanam twice in a year from past 40 yrs. The book he has been using is Geetha Press Gorakhpur.

Now he needs a book with big fonts due to age factor.

Could you anybody please let me know  where is  valmiki Ramayanam bool with big fonts available?

I searched in vedantha book house Bangalore they give same small font book.

His 1st preference is Devanagari otherwise kannada is also fine. Important thing is big fonts.

Thanking you in advance.
Arun

It is available here: https://sa.wikisource.org/wiki/वर्गः:वाल्मीकिरामायणम्. On a browser you can blow it up as big as you want.

Please check the Oriental Library, also ParakaaLee maTha in Mysore.
Many aasthaana Vidwans were great scholars and good number were Iyengars. Jaya  Chamaraja Wodeyar printed all of VEdas in Kannada first time in Indian history, which should be available. The great Pandurangi brothers originally great scholar professors may have through many of their next generation scholars settled in the USA.

It might be difficult to do a pArAyaNa on a browser on a computer/laptop/reader. Perhaps workable is a magnifying glass with the current setup. It might slow down the pArAyaNa, but that has its own advantages.

Dear Arun

What a via media is:   You can find where the copiable version of Valmiiki Ramayana is available in the net; (sanskritdocuments.org); (valmikiramayan.net), there is another source /link, in the sanskritdocuments.org, copy page by page, sarga by saga, to Word, format it, and get a Kindle or Ipad, laptop for your father; and upload it there and your father can use it;  this is the easiest and only practical method; though little time consuming.

Physical Books are always fixed fonts; whereas digital epubs/word documents can be free flowing.

If your father is quite good or can be trained to use the laptop, Valmiki Ramayan.net would be a good place to start using it; because one can have a choice to set a specific browser only for reading VR, and set its default font size to our size.    The other browsers can be used for normal use in the laptop.

I hear that though many Gita Press books are available in Amazon kindle as ebook - I do not know about VR (which is put there without Gita press permission); they may not be with dynamic fonts)
please check that out.  if it is pdf (though digital) would not be of any help.

What I suggest (that is copying to Word and using it either in Laptop/ipad/Kindle) is the best option, because then one it can have the backgrond lighting, zoomability, free flowability, etc.

That is why I have been always converting all my physical books to digital epub books for my personal use and do not purchase physical books, and even if I purchase, I scan and convert it to pdf/epub/Word myself and read it through my phone/laptop/desktop.

Thanks and regards

Rāmu

I am in the process of creating epub of some of the smaller slokas like Sri Vishnu Sahasaranamam. The idea is to make this available as ebooks and easily downloadable on smart phones (Apple and Android only). Some of these books are available on the Apple Book Store and on the Google Play store for people to download and use. There is no cost to them.

These are all in epub format. The reason for choosing epub is that the fonts are scalable. One can easily expand the text by using our fingers. Also with the backlighting on the phone, even in dark places the script is readable. I am using the “siddhanta” font for my purposes. The advantage with this font is, it is free and can be embedded into any document I create. The disadvantages are that I cannot make something bold or stand out. I hope the creators of this font are in this group and can address this drawback.

Ebooks in epub format are highly portable and can be moved across systems — PCs, phones, tablets etc.

The major reasons why I choose this method of publications is that with a phone with enough memory, one can have Valmiki Ramayana, Srimadh Bhagavatam, Vishnu Puranam, and other scriptures in one’s plam that is easily searchable and referenceable. The currently available books, while they are very good, are big and unwieldy. We can learn something from our colonial masters. They distribute the bible that is beautifully printed, in very thin and almost transparent pages and in a size that is easily portable. I was originally aiming for this, and saw an edition of the Mantrapushpam from Ramakrishna Mission that is the size of a small palm sized dairy. But then I found that one needs a magnifying glass to read these, and also the younger generation has totally eschewed books in favor of electronic handheld devices…...

Please give them a try. You can go to the apple book store or the google play store and search for “raja srinivasan”. You will get a list of the small books I have made available. Would welcome feedback.

These books today are in samskritam. My children and their friends want me now to create these same ebooks in english script so they can follow along and recite. With this in mind, I have started working on transliterating some of these into english. The format I have chosen is that there will be a line of samskritam script immediately followed by the english script. I tried this and found that it does not really work well on small handheld devices. So now I am thinking, I should have 2 sections — the first section in the original format followed by another section in the english transliterated script.

Since there seems to be a need for Valmiki Ramayana, I plan to start on this soon and will get the first version completed by end of September, right in time for Vijayadasami (at least that is the hope). For the second revision, I would like to break the script into their sandhi for easy recitation purposes — basically break the sandhi so that one can recite them in the correct chhandas. This will take a long time to edit and create. But maybe a future task for 2023. For now, I would like to get Valmiki Ramayana, and Srimadh Bhagavatam in these formats for this year. If someone else is working on a project like this please share details. I also want to add sloka by sloka translation, along the lines of what Gita Press is doing.

Thanks & Regards
Raja Srinivasan

I looked at your SriStuti in Google Books. Good initiative. I liked
the mini introduction. Couple of items as feedback.

A pronunciation guide for various symbols used to transliterate so
that it is easy for those who don't know Sanskrit.
Just like the succinct intro, a summary translation for each sloka
would also be helpful

Thanks
Venkat

Sri Raja

Great Initiative. God speed your efforts.

The problem with digital formats are many. They are not much helpful, unless they are free flowable like epubs.   Many books though available as pdf ebooks are not usable in small devices, due to its inherent structure, whether it is text PDF or whether it is image-converted PDF.

I also am a great subscriber of the thought of epub books, which can be read across all devices.   Many epubs still do not support vernacular fonts also is a problem and they do not render the characters properly.   There is no single format.

Thank you Rāmu-ji. Try the Siddhanta font for samskritam. It seems to work well. I also tried the font called “RAJA”. This is owned by Maharishi International University (or someone from there owns it). There are some copyright issues around this font. It is also a north indian font so some of the characters show up in a different style and makes the documents difficult to read. The documents in VedicReserve.miu.edu are all based on this font. And in practice I found that many folks who know Hindi and Samskritam from South India and Bengal and Maharashtra have difficulty in reading this font.
