Margie,

  स्युः  (syuḥ)

Could be the accusative plural of the verb to be.

So perhaps "All of them are" .

But, as always, proper interpretation requires a context.

I think dictionary meaning will not be available for the conjugated verbs, but only for the verbs and nouns or indeclinables.

The above is the optative or potential mood form of the root अस् = to be. meaning may be existing, in the plural of third person.

Thank you! Just wondering: in Sanskrit, what would be the synonym for "optative or potential mood form"? If I want to study all possible conjugations of Dhatu Rupa, is Dhatu Rupavali the best source?

नमस्ते !

स्युः = अस् धातोः (विधि)लिङ् लकारे प्रथमपुरुष-बहुवचनान्तं रूपम् ।

The dictionary meaning would be "they/ones aught to be" (rule - विधि)  or "they might be" (possibility - सम्भावना).

शुभम्

Jaichander,

  Interesting!

I have obtained a Romanised version Bhatti Ravanavadha (Bhattikavya).htm from GRETIL.

And have been scanning it for your quote

स्युः (syu) = अस् धातोः (as dhāto) (विधि (vidhi))लिङ् लकारे प्रथमपुरुष-बहुवचनान्तं रूपम् (li lakāre prathamapurua-bahuvacanānta rūpam)

However (I read बहुवचनान्तं as bahuvacanāntā), I can't pick it up.

I'm looking for that stuff on potential/optative moods.

What rendition, what Chaper & Verse No.s do I seek?

Margie,

I suspect Dhatu Rupavali will help you the other way, to find various conjugation of अस्, rather than finding what form स्यु: is..
I am sure you have a copy of Dhatu Rupavali, otherwise it is available of Sanskritebooks.com
