Hello,

Can someone please recommend few books/classics written by Kalidasa, etc. with word-by-word breakdown from Samskritam to English / Hindi, followed by explanations, commentary.

Will prefer Indian translated books.

Thanks.

Word-by-word is a bit difficult to find in English:

* The Complete Works of Kālidāsa by CR Devadhar has verse-by-verse Sanskrit-English translation.
* The Complete Works of Kālidāsa by NP Unni has verse-by-verse Sanskrit-English translation.
* The Complete Works of Kālidāsa by Chandra Ranjan has verse-by-verse English-only translation.
* Various individual texts of Kālidāsa have been translated by MR Kale. Their presentation differs from book-to book. Some have the Sanskrit verses in the first section of the book with the English translation following in the second, while others have verse-by-verse translation. Some have commentaries by Mallinātha and Kāṭayavēma, others don't.
* You will find other translations as well if you search for it. For instance, there is Śaṅkararāma Śāstrī's translations published by Bālamanōramā Press.

There is a lot of material available in Hindi.

* At least two कालिदास ग्रन्थावलीs are available (UP Sanskrit Sansthan & Chowkhambha). They provide a verse-by-verse translation by splitting the page vertically. However very little attention is paid to align the verses.
* Chowkhambha, MLBD and other publishers publish individual plays/poems as well with Hindi translations and commentary. Students use these a lot I guess as you tend to find the word-by-word stuff here.

Thank you, Karthikji. I will certainly look it up.

I wanted some personal recommendation, hence the request...  The online route is fraught with trial & error, & not always reliable.

Sandeep mahodaya,
Abhijnanasakuntalam with word for word Sanskrit to Sanskrit translation with Hindi translation too is published by chowkhamba.
Malavikagnimitram -ditto- by chowkhamba.
Mudrarakshasam by Visakhadatta with word for word Sanskrit to English translation accompanied by Hindi translation published by Chowkhamba.
If you do not wish to make an online search, do write to Chowkhamba, varanasi, asking them what other works they have published with word for word translation.
Regards.
