Dear list members

I would like to share my Sanskrit metrical translation of Narsinh Mehta’s most famous composition, ‘Vaishnava Jana To ...’. The original composition has the 8 + 8 + 8 + 6 mātrā structure, and is usually sung with a tāla of 8 beats by stretching the last long syllable re of each line to four beats. My translation has the 8 + 8 + 8 + 5 mātrā structure, and can be sung with tāla of 8 beats by stretching the last short syllable of each line to four beats. I have also attempted to use Sanskrit equivalents of the Gujarati words to the extent possible. Corrections (if any) and suggestions for improvement are welcome, especially from the Gujarati speakers of the group.

Thanks, Nityananda

Well done!

Vaiṣṇavajanastu sa uchyate yaḥ pīḍā̇ parasya jānāti|
paraduḥkheṣvupakṛtyāpi yasya mano'bhimāno nāyāti||

Call those people Vaishnavas who
Feel the pain of others,
Help those who are in misery,
But never let self-conceit enter their mind.

Sakalaloke cha samȧ  vandate nindako nāsti kasyāpi|
vākkarmamanastrikȧ  nirmalȧ  dhanyā jananī tasyāpi||

They respect the entire world,
Do not disparage anyone,
Keep their words, actions and thoughts pure,
The mother of such a soul is blessed.

Samadṛṣṭiryastṛṣṇātyāgī parastrī yasya mātā'sti|
jihvā klāntā'pi na mṛṣā vadati paravasu na kare gṛhṇāti||

They see all equally, renounce craving,
Respect other women as their own mother,
Their tongue never utters false words,
Their hands never touch the wealth of others.

Māyāmohau vyāpnuto na yȧ  dṛḍhavairāgyȧ  sanmanasi|
rāmanāmnashcha tāle lagnaḥ sakalatīrthāni tadvapuṣi||

They do not succumb to worldly attachments,
They are firmly detached from the mundane,
They are enticed by the name of God (Rama),
All places of pilgrimage are embodied in them.

Gatalobho yaḥ kapaṭavirahitaḥ kāmȧ  krodhȧ  vārayati|
bhaṇati nṛhariḥ sa darshanātkulānyekasaptatï  tārayati||

They have forsaken greed and deceit,
They stay afar from lust and anger,
Narsi says: I'd be grateful to meet such a soul,
Whose virtue liberates their entire lineage.

Here is YouTube music and translation.

PM modifies this Bhajan saying Lok(jan) Pratinidhi instead of Vaishnava Jana

You may translate this poem into Sanskrit  using Sanskrit equivalents of the Gujarati words.
અખિલ બ્રહ્માંડમાં એક તું શ્રીહરિ – નરસિંહ મહેતા
अखिल ब्रह्मांडमां एक तुं श्रीहरि – नरसिंह महेता

Some people requested me to sing my metrical translation of ‘Vaishnava Jana To ...’ into Sanskrit which I shared yesterday. Here is a rendition in its popular style. Listen, comment, and share if you like.

Two minor corrections have been made to the lyrics.
