Dear all,

I came across a text published in the Dublin University Magazine, between 1853 and 54, called "The Dream of Ravan", by an anonymous author. The author says the english text is made of fragments of an ancient indian one with the same title, maybe in sanskrit, although the autor uses much of marathi. I would like to ask, if you please, for your help, if you know the original text and where i can find it.

Many thanks in advance!
Regards,
Ricardo Martins

Ricardo,

If you can attach a scanned image of the page that you have, maybe we can make something out of it.  (I can also read the Marathi in it.)

Dear Mr. Martins;

The title "Dream of Ravan" appears so intriguing!  Is it possible for you to send us a small brief about the contents?  Thank you kindly (in advance).  Of course, it will be even more gratifying if you have an on-line source either in English, Hindi or Kannada!!

Ricardo,

I entered 'The Dream of Ravan' in Google and got several hits, one of which is a pdf version of the text called 'The Dream of Ravan'.

Those interested in helping you can do the same and advise you.

At this stage, it appears that the text has something to do with the Theosophical movement.

I browsed through the book, "Dream of Ravan" after downloading.In my view the author is an Englishman who has created a fictional ( all his own around known story of Ramayana) work to express his understanding of Vedantic philosophy. He quotes a bit of Adhyatma Ramayana and a bit of Gita too. The work is not a translation. Even the passages which are purportedly translations are a part of author's fertile imagination.

According to these sources below the author was Mahatma Kauthumi in the Theosophy circles, a 'Punjabi Brahmin, studied at Oxford'...etc., later settled in Kashmir and Tibet.

Thank you very much for satisfying my curiosity.  I spent a whole day and read the whole book!  I did enjoy the expressive beauty of the language and the imagery, in the beginning passages.  Later I got a little confused.  The author couldn't be an Indian who actually had read Valmiki!  Mariichi was killed long before the war started  and Indrajit was killed much later in the war.  Never heard of Ravana's armies singing Bhajans of Krisha!! (a totally ridiculous explanation is offered for this!)  Lots of things appear even worse than ridiculous!  The author is in good company with those ridiculous Christians who claim Valluvar was Xavier's disciple!
