राष्ट्रिय-संस्कृत-संस्थानम् has a 5-level course, each level named as a दीक्षा - hence प्रथमा दीक्षा ... There are also alternate names to these 5 levels.
As can be seen most of संस्कृत-व्यवहार is covered in first two levels only. The third and fourth levels deal in काव्य. That is interesting, because most of Sanskrit literature is काव्य.

The entire course is structured as a "Teach Yourself" course. The राष्ट्रिय-संस्कृत-संस्थानम् has its own prescribed textbooks. They are very low-priced. This 5-level course is to be done by doing the 5 examinations.

For all these good points, the biggest drawback is the examination-system. You do the examination and results will come after 6 months. In that period, a "Teach Yourself" student will lose all his enthusiasm, remaining in suspense about what the result is going to be !

I did प्रथमा दीक्षा and द्वितीया दीक्षा together, in one go. Yes, one can do that, if one has "taught oneself" as good. When the results came after about six months, I was only verbally told that I had passed both with 92% score. Certificates will come only after another "n" number of months ! I have not checked whether and when the certificates came in at the center, where I did the examinations. Nor the people at the center bothered to inform me. I also did not bother to collect my certificates,

I guess, first four levels should be equivalent to BA in Sanskrit and the fifth level, because it is named व्युत्पादिनी (विशेषम् उत्पादनम् अस्याः इति व्युत्पादिनी = special creativity from this one) should be equivalent to MA.

If the examination system, i.e. declaration of results and issuance of certificates improves, it is a good scheme.

राष्ट्रिय-संस्कृत-संस्थानम् also has a website http://www.sanskrit.nic.in/ and राष्ट्रिय-संस्कृत-संस्थानम् is a GOI-organisation and its certificates would have recognition all over India.

This is further to my previous message, where I mentioned about exams of In this message I would like to appraise you about exams of

भारतीय विद्या भवन is certainly one of the oldest, maybe, the oldest institute offering exams in Sanskrit. Your basic question was about BA in Sanskrit. The कोविद exam of भारतीय विद्या भवन is said to be equivalent to BA in Sanskrit. In an old brochure the कोविद exam is called as पदवीपरीक्षा.

I would highly commend the exams of भारतीय विद्या भवन, because the textbooks themselves offer the best "graded" learning of Sanskrit, the best among, whatever exam and textbook schemes I have come across. The scheme of examinations is in steps as बालबोध (1 paper of 50 marks), प्रारम्भिक (1 paper of 50 marks), प्रवेश (2 papers of 50 marks each), परिचय (3 papers of 50 marks each) and कोविद (4 papers of 50 marks each). I hope, I am correct. You may please check at a center of भारतीय विद्या भवन nearest to you. Details of all centers of भारतीय विद्या भवन are available at their website http://www.bhavans.info/kendra/index.asp

Textbooks of भारतीय विद्या भवन are fairly low-priced and are available in different languages. One can take the exam also in the language of one's choice. Language is important for two types of questions, (1) Translate the following from ___ language into Sanskrit (2) Translate the following from Sanskrit into ___ language.

The textbooks are called So, they are "Teach Yourself" books. But it would always be good, if you can find a teacher, because a good teacher will give some "insight", which will enhance the depth of understanding.

The exams are held twice in a year and the declaration of results and issuance of certificates is also quite well-organized.

Thank you for your response. I will check the links suggested.
I went through राष्ट्रिय-संस्कृत-संस्थानम् site, bud did not find the 5 level courses you talked about, However the site directed me to Mukta Svadhyaya Peetham ( Institute of Distance Education) and they provide similar courses,
Prak-Shastri (+2) , Prak-Shastri Bridge, Shastri (B.A.), Shastri Bridge, Acharya (M.A.).

Since I am graduate ( with No Sanskrit), there are some institutes that provide 'Bridge' course for the same.
I will also have a look at भारतीय विद्या भवन as you mentioned.
Thank you very much, and I appreciate your response.

Hi,

BA in Sanskrit is also offered by Rashtriya Sanskrita Vidyapeerham Tirupati. This is offered in regular and distance education mode. I believe that the last date for admissions this academic year is extended up to this month end.  You may want to check their website below.

Thanks

Apart from the self-study mode, राष्ट्रिय-संस्कृत-संस्थानम् also has BA (शास्त्री) in distance education mode. Course medium is Sanskrit ONLY. Currently admissions are open (till 20th October. With Rs. 500 fine, up to 27th October). Here is the link for complete details and online application …

They have 13 different branches across India and hence you can choose the one nearest to you for writing exam, etc. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
