Namaskara.

With the recitations you are doing in your home, you have already made more than a start!

I have a number of recordings with repetitions for learning (see attached list) but I cannot offer them on the www.chant-sanskrit.com website because I simply recorded them during our weekly Veda recitation class with Sree Aswath.   If there is one you would like to study next, please let me know and I can make it available for temporary download.   I can provide you with the text also for any of these.

There are also several of these recordings that are chanted more slowly, with shorter phrases (see attached list).

Best wishes,

Cynthia M. Churchill, M.D.

Subject: [Samskrita] Learning Veda

Hi,

In our home, we recite Vishnu, Lalitha Sahasranama, Raghu Veera Gadyam, Samkshepa Ramayana, Sri & Purusha Sukta etc. apart from doing regular Murthi Puja.

I am curious, if it is possible to learn some basic portions of Veda. How to start learning Veda? Is there any DVD/CD/Online Resource teaching proper Vedic chanting?

Learned members please help.

Thanks,
Srikanth.

Der Srikanth,

Nothing can beat learning from the Guru himself. Learning through DVDs
or other hear say formats is not recommended though by the scholars,
as mistakes will happen thro such medium and one will find it
difficult to correct the mistakes.

Some are attempting to learn through skype mode from their teacher as well.

Kuppu

Srikanth,
It depends upon where you live, if you have access to a veda pandit or gurukulam then ask them to teach whatever you want to learn. It should be fairly easy if you reside in India and if you are in USA then associate yourself with a local temple and usually priests there are very helpful in the matter as well.
Its Veda pundit's moral code that they do not charge fee for teaching Vedas. After learning you must give gurudakshina which also they would not demand.
Usually its not a good idea to learn from CD or any electronic media.
When I learned Sri and Purusha sukta from CD I felt pretty confident but later decided to ask a learnt veda pundit to teach me, I did not tell him that I learned these through CDs and believe me he found many mistakes in my recitation.

In short its my recommendation not to learn from electronic media, oral tradition is the best.

Raama

TAD VIDDHI PRANIPATENA PARI PRASHNENA SEVAYA
UPADEKSHANTI TE JNANAM JNANINAH TATTVADARSHINAH

TAD VIJNARTHAM SA GURUMEVA ABHIGACHET
SAMITPANIH SHOTRIYAM BRAHMANISHTAM

These two verses one from Gita and other from Mundaka will convince you to study only under the tutelage of a Guru.
Understand "gurumeva abhigachet"  study only through guru..

Shankara has commented on gita bhashya that he who has not studied under sampradaya should be considered as a fool, even if he is expert on the subjects(murkhavadeva )

So stop self study, but practice self after learning through guru.

From my personal experience, the "legitimacy" of veda ghosha happens only when getting diksha from guru. otherwise all chanting is "ineffective".

you can learn the veda suktas from several sources, but get diksha from a guru once.

basic suktam-s: no matter what, purusha suktam, sri suktam are "must". then there are several others depending guru diksha and tradition - manyu suktam, mantra pushpam, pavamana suktam, ambhrini suktam etc

i have also heard that without sandhyvandana, chanting veda/murti puja does not have effect.
