To all the knowledgable members of the group, please let me know the root meaning of the word 'Parinayam' (marriage) and what individual root words constitute it.

I also would humbly like to seek all your wishes and blessings as I am going to get married on December 25th of this year. (Other than Samskrit, sources in English and Telugu are also welcome as i have the ability to follow text in those languages too)

Can you also let me know some good sources which explain the fundamentals of marriage in hindu tradition which I would like to read so that I can perform my duties well as a grihastha.

Dear Mr Balu,

the word pariNaya (wedding, marriage) is from the verb pari-Nayati. pari- means around (like peri- in Greek words: peri-pheral, peri-meter...) and the root nî (pres. nayati) means to lead. So the meaning is: leading around. This refers to leading the bride around the fire in the wedding ceremony. At this point, the deeper religious sense of this ritual can be explained by Hindu paNDita much better!

The word is from the root nī to lead, with the prefix pari (around); hence parinaya is “a leading around”  referring to the groom leading the bride around the fire in seven steps.

I understand that the three sections in TirukkuraL have the titles "arattuppaL" "poruTpaL" and "kAmattuppaL" In turn, they dwell upon aspects of अर्थ धर्म and काम respectively.
Does that become a consummate treatise on leading one's life most appropriately ?
I guess, you are well-versed in TamiL also. Please enlighten.
I think TirukkuraL have been translated in many, many languages, including Sanskrit.

It also comes to mind that नीतिशतकम् and शृङ्गार-शतकम् by भर्तृहरिः also make a good summary on aspects of धर्म and काम Possibly नीतिशतकम् covers both अर्थ and धर्म This way भर्तृहरिः also covers all three aspects of अर्थ धर्म and काम

Congratulations on your marriage! Now we could understand the etymological meaning of the word parinay as scholars have explaine it correctly. In my opinian, we should have a broader meaning of this great word and should not be just wandering "around fire". A marriage is a union of two souls and both parties should take an oath to lead each other's life reciprocally towards achieving the higher objectives of life. Thus, by parinaya, we can understand that one has to lead his/her partener's life wisely, in the best possible way to make his/her life easier and successful, rendering him/her to achieve all the puruShaarthas of life.

 

Wish you again a pleasant/happy/successful married life. Do your duties correctly.

The word Parinaya comes from Agni Parinayana which is going round the fire as an essential part of the marriage ceremony. Other words which mean marriage are Vivaha(which comes from the dhatu Vah- to carry referring to the travel to her husband's home), Udvaha, also from the same dhatu, Panigrahana( Holding the hand of the bride by the groom) and Upayama(Bringing one closer).
