Namaste,
I've been hearing for years now that Aashadha Masa is in-auspicious for performing any auspicious deeds. Is there a reference to this in ancient scriptures? Why a few Masas and Tithis are considered in-auspicious in our culture.

I don't think it is considered inauspicious.  The well-known Pandharpur temple with Pandhuranga deity is right now having its annual Ashadhi yatra.  Many thousands participate in this every year.

Being a rainy season is one reason. Ashadha is the " dusk month" of Devas, closing of uttarayana, start of dakshinayana. For Keralites this month is for reading Ramayana, pilgrimage to temples. Where as in Tamizhu nadu the prefer to buy gold as they say aadiponuu aadi valarum ie gold savings will increase if got in Ashada. TN people are also performin some temple rituals only on this month.

One can Read History of Dharmashastras by P.V. Kane to get an encyclopedic view on the question asked all the volumes are available at archive.org. A detailed discussion on Maasa and Tithis why certain time is considered auspicious or in-auspicious will divert the groups attention to astrology and related sciences. I don't know how many would be interested in such discussions
