Namaaste All, 

I heard below mantra in a discourse but could not find good reference. 

Chatvari vak parimita padani tani

ye vidur bramhanaye manishinah 

There could be typos in the above mantra, can knowledgeable people please give me the correct mantra in Devangari and if possible, its source

I came across it as part of Patanjali's Mahabhashyam.  Origin details - I did not register.

"पस्पशाह्निके शास्त्रप्रयोजनाधिकरणे"

चत्वारि शृङ्गा त्रयो अस्य पादा          द्वे शीर्षे सप्त हस्तासो अस्य ।
त्रिधा बद्धो वृषभो रोरवीति                   महो देवो मर्त्याँ आविवेश ॥

चत्वारि वाक्परिमिता पदानि              तानि विदुर्ब्राह्मणा ये मनीषिणः ।
गुहा त्रीणि निहिता नेङ्गयन्ति            तुरीयं वाचो मनुष्या वदन्ति ॥

These are in addition to the one referred by Vidya in her message, found in Mahabhashya, which also has got a beautiful explanation applying the mantra, to Vak grammatically referring to the parts of speech.  Anyhow you seem not to be interested in the commentaries or different interpretations. It has been commented in  Nirukta also different classification in 4. A member has already attached Sayana's commentary in his reply.

Initially I just wanted to know the mantra and source, now I am curious to know more about it. Sayana Bhashya is great and I did not read Vidyaji blog, because of access issue but will read soon. 

Any other information that you can add would be helpful too.

१३,८         तानि विदुर्ब्राह्मणा ये मेधाविनः।

१३,८         गुहायां त्रीणि निहितानि न अर्थं वेदयन्ते ।

१३,८         गुहा गूहतेः, तुरीयं त्वरतेः।

१३,८         कतमानि तानि चत्वारि पदानि ।

१३,८      ऊँकारो महाव्याहृतिश्च इत्यार्षम् ।
