shliṣhṭā kriyā kasyacid ātmasaṁsthā sankrāntir anyasya visheShayuktā ।
yasyobhayaṁ sādhu sa śikṣakāṇāṁ dhuri pratiṣṭhāpayitavya eva ||
(मालविकाग्निमित्र.   1.16.)

Somebody has the learning (knowledge or expertize) in contained in himself fine. (but not capable of transferring it to others).  Some other has specialized skill of transferring (teaching the knowledge whatever he has got)(but he need not have accumulated knowledge like the other). One who has got both of them (the qualifications - skill in learning himself and in teaching others), is to be placed first among the teachers. (He is the first rate Teacher).

The gist is that though everybody can learn and teach others, some have the capacity of learning a lot of things, but lack the skill of teaching it to others and some others have the skill of teaching (whatever they have learnt), but lack the skill of learning (i.e.accumulation of knowledge). 

This is common experience in the field of teaching. Those who have great knowledge, need not be the good teachers and the best teachers need not be having great knowledge (but enough to teach what the student needs).  

Hope this makes some sort of appreciation though my English can be as bad as the bad teaching.

Act 1 Verse 16

( The whole of the stanza is in the form of a general satement from which a meaning relating to the subject matter namely, the two rival teachers is understood. This is the case of अप्रस्तुताप्रश्मसा . It may be noted that Kalidasa is very fond of this figure os speech which occurs, not only in Sanskrit verses, but also in the prose passages in Sanskrit or Prakrit)

The question was precisely about the Mallainatha's interpretation, not about all the commentaries published on Malavikagnimitra. Hope you will understand the question and the precise information than expecting one to download all the files and look if they are containing Mallinatha/s commentary. Thanks for the links. Sorry for my previous message and I apologize if it hurt you.

For your information, the NSP Edition contains as I expected the  Malavikagnimitram of Kalidasa with Sanskrit Commentary by Katayavema Ed by KP Parab and the second contains the text critically Edited with Notes in English. 3rd DLI link contains the commentary of Taranatha Vacaspati Bhattacharya and the other one as you clearly mentioned with an English Translation. 

As far as I know Mallinatha didn't comment on any of the drama-s of Kalidasa, though he did on his 3 major Kavya-s along with two others किरातार्जुनीयम् of भारवि and नैषधीयचरितम् of श्रीहर्ष forming the पञ्चमहाकाव्य-s for traditional study. I had heard that one is awarded महामहोपाध्याय on writing a commentary on the last of the series, नैषधीयचरित.

There are two more verses of Kalidasa about knowledge. I giving it here with translations.


यस्यागमः केवलजीविकायै
तं ज्ञानपण्यं वणिजं वदन्ति।
 
(मालविकाग्निमित्रम् : १ - १७)  [ The last two lines of the verse]
 
 
One whose learning only serves as a means of livelihood, is called a mere trader who uses agreessive/annoying methods to sell his products.
 
आ परितोषाद्विदुषां न साधु मन्ये प्रयोगविज्ञानम् ।
 
बलवदपि शिक्षितानामात्मन्यप्रत्ययं चेतः ॥
 
(अभिज्ञान शाकुन्तलम् : १ - २) 
 
Until the wise are satisfied, I do not consider my knowledge, which I present, to be perfect. The mind of men although well instructed has no confidence in itself.

Dear Sir,  When Mahakavi Kalidasa was faced with a challenge from another tough Poet, kalidasa observes that the opponent has bit of stammering and so composes a terse poem(as below) which opponent could not replicate (because of stammering). Any more details of this?(meaning and reference to any books/web sites) :

I suspect that this tongue-twister is the creation of some unknown word-craftsman and apocryphally attributed to Kalidasa, as has happened to several other verses.

BTW, can you give the real verse behind it?

There are several stories on Kalidasa and all need not be looked for in any poem.

Kalidasa original or not, the tongue-twister seems interesting  to me. I would enjoy it  if  good devnagari script versions  of the many variants emerges, along with meaning.
 I can see that  it probably  has nothing to do with the original query of shri Sunder Hattangadi, but I hope it gets pursued.

I am not sure, if any of these are correctly spelt. Frankly because I could not comprehend the meaning of any of the words. Also wondering first of all, what is the meaning of this whole padyam.
