Hari Om,

I have seen many sites, including this email list where the Devanagari font is used.

I’d like to do the same, also include it on documents that I create in Office Word.

What’s the most universal way of doing this, a way to share with others online and through documents that won;t mess up the text?

Many thanks,
Vivek

You need what is known as IME (Input method editor). I prefer pramukhIME on my windows and my android phone. Works very well on both. Google for INE of your choice. That way you can type in Devanagari across all applications.

hariH OM,

You can use the BhashaIME tool. Search on Google. The developer is extremely responsive.

Android, Ubuntu, Windows (from 7 onwards, even XP, but you must configure during setup in that case), all come with settings to enable one to type in most of the Unicode scripts. Devanagari is no exception. These native methods are very efficient and best for the respective OS. You do not need to rely on any third party software, mentioned in the posts above or otherwise.

Did you ever look at the native keyboards? may be you are well versed with these keyboards for some reason T for उ and Y for ब/भ is not very intuitive way to type.

This is a very interesting question, indeed. There are two types of keyboards available for most Indic scripts. One kind is like what you mentioned (t for उ), known as INSCRIPT layout. The other (called Bolnagari, for देवनागरी, or a similar "KaKhaGa phonetic") is based on some intuitive mapping from Roman to देवनागरी based loosely on sounds (u for उ). The second one (Bolnagari) is also available on Ubuntu (I am not sure about Windows). It allows for new users to start typing quickly. But there are a few issues. Users can begin fast using Bolnagari layout but in the long run the INSCRIPT is more efficient. Moreover, while Bolnagari is based on Roman keyboard (which in turn preserves useless historical developments, like homage to Qwert Yuiop), the INSCRIPT layout, designed by C-DAC is based on more fundamental concepts (like keeping vowels together, vyanjans arranged properly according to the वर्ग, etc.) Users of INSCRIPT don't need to remember where U is in the Roman keyboard. That's the reason I think it is better.

So if anyone wants to type देवनागरी for a very little time, use the Bolnagari or KaKhaGa phonetic keyboard. If you want to type regularly, the INSCRIPT layout can be learned in a week, giving ten minutes per day.

Agreed BolNagari is bit better but f/F for ट/ठ is counter intuitive as well I had modify Bolnagari in Ubuntu
Some is true for श ञ ज्ञ, ड ढ ङ
Much better than Inscript but like I said it all depends on which one you got used to. For me and few others I know this worked great for Windows and Mac

The conventional keyboard has limited number of keys which are assigned to English alphabets.
When we map devanAgarI or any similar letter to them, it is obvious that the keyboard will not entertain then in straight way.
We may be able to map स and श to 's' and 'shif+s'; but what about ष.
Similarly, we may map द and ड to 'd' and 'shift+d', but what about ध and ढ.
We have to compromise.
So, we try to put most similar sounds of devanAgarI, etc. to similar sounding Roman alphabet.
Then we consider left letters and map them to key which may not have matching sound, or may not have a sound at all(like , , etc.)
Even then we try to put similar sound on one key.

This is what I tried with medhA IME which was created for personal use. It has helped many.
People interested may see it's scheme here : http://eng.lalitaalaalitah.com/keyboard/

Did you look at this link? It clearly shows the key combination on top of each image on the link I shared.
https://ubcsanskrit.ca/keyboards.html
It solves that very problem thats why I like it.
स - s
श - S
ष - Option+S / Alt+S

द - d
ध - D
ड - Option D / Ctrl + Alt D
ढ - Option+shift D / Ctrl + Alt+Shift +D

I have Mac so left option key becomes really handy (I don't have to hold 3 keys and press D). But I used the keyboard with equal ease in windows. and Created my own layout in Ubuntu on Mac machine - matching this arrangement.
Ukulele is a good software interface to create your own layout

There is no right or wrong method, whichever one is one comfortable with.

I created it with MSKLC and it was uploaded to mediafire. I think there is no way to tamper that package, as it was uploaded to my mediafire account.
So, I'm sure that it's false positive.

I you are cautious enough, I may upload the same in ISO format.

Hi learned scholars,

I found the Google Input Tools most helpful, it can predict words when you type in English and you could install it in desktop or Google Chrome.

You could even check out the online version as well.

Check it here.

Namaste,
Nice recommendations,
This lay man uses quillpad editor, online, can be used from desk top, mobile hand set or simply get as an extension to your chrome and use where ever you go.

best wishes
