What is the meaning of the word svāhā? This is used during fire sacrifice when offering is made. Does svāhā mean 'I offer'? Is this an avyaya(indeclinable) ?

Thanks
Srinivas

Certainly it is an अव्यय when used with the offerings and take चतु्र्थी विभक्ति with which it is pronounced. As a noun it is the name of अग्नि.

स्वाहा is अग्नि's wife and she takes the offerings in यज्ञ to respective Deities.
so when we say इनद्राय स्वाहा means स्वाहा carries the offering to Lord Indra and so on....

hope this is correct.

Su+aha --well said, once while a rishi was about to offer ghee -ahuti to agni when his sweat fell on it. When he was doubting whether to
Offer or not, the akasavani asked him to offer the same to agni. Then he said "su- aha". And offered tge ahuti to agni. From then on this became a custom.
This is a tale in the vedas.

According to Srimadbhagwat Puran Swaha is daughter of Daksh Prajapati and was married with Agni. It is said that Agni is the mouth of Devtas, and Agni takes the offering when it is offered through her wife Swaha. In the same way Svadha is another daughter of Daksh and married to Pitrugan. So when we offer to Devtaas we say Swaha and when we offer to Pitrugan we say Swadha.
