namaste,

Yesterday, we had a post on a nice new tool around the Apte dictionary. This reminded me to post about another set of sanskrit dictionary links.

The link above hosts the "mudgala kosha" software, which searches an offline version of the monier-williams dictionary, and integrates with several online tools (DLI dictionaries, JNU declension engine, INRIA parser etc). It is a wrapper around many useful sanskrit web utilities. It is a windows-only application.

Designed primarily for mobile devices, I have converted a number of files to the "stardict" dictionary format. This is supported on several platforms and mobile devices. The stardict files include bi-directional searchable files for the apte & monier-williams dictionary, as well as several vyAkaraNa related files (dhAtu-pATha, and several standard commentaries on the ashtAdhyAyii).

Screenshots on the iphone and android devices are available at the link above. Though these tools were written primarily for my own use, others may find them useful.

I want to communicate that not being aware of the Mugdala Kosha existence I did upload it the one I have, for some years, in Internet Archive.
This my communication directly responsabilizes me and never Internet Archive; if there is here fault, it is totally mine.
If will be necessary, please tell me, I will attempt to annihilate this antique software from there.
I deep apologize but my intention has been the best.
Sincerely yours
Jonathan

Ajit,
Please make it clear on these web sites of yours, that the literature, kindly made available for download, is in Devanagari script only.

The web page, being in English with Sanskrit works given in Roman diacritics, misleadingly lead the Devanagari challenged, such as myself to hopefully expect something usefully readable.

l am able to machine transliterate Devanagari texts, if I have to, but pdfs don’t transliterate.

The Sanskrit Cause you allege, is an admirable one, not so the The Devanagari Cause, I would even go as far as to say that Devanagari is Sanskrit’s worst enemy, as far as global recognition is concerned!

As an example of how it’s done, here is a multi-volume work of the world’s first written language, 90 years in the making – and not a Babylonian squiggle in sight!

A linguist may find It very interesting, it can be even downloaded for free, but its rather massive in total.

Eddie

Eddie,

As I stated at the end of my mail, I am not trying to cater to you, or
anyone else. Take it, or leave it, at your discretion. My mail only
pointed your to a set of stardict files (which state whether or not
they are in roman script / devanagari) as well as the mudgala kosha
tool (which understands a wide variety of input and displays text in a
variety of formats). I did not point this list to any of the other
texts on my site.

I pretty much expected a reply from you that was full of criticism. In
the future, please direct these to my personal mailbox, so that I can
ingnore them and move on with my day.

> As an example of how it’s done

I am in no need of such examples, though I thank you for taking the
time to make it.

> The Sanskrit Cause you allege, is an admirable one, not so the The
> Devanagari Cause

I have my own views on the subject, and have no plans to revise them
based on your vitriol.

namaste,

I guess that I am confused about the intent of your mail. If you are
taking about some different software -- great. The more, the merrier.
If you uploaded an older version of mudgala kosha, great. My site was
down for a long time, and the software was not available from me for a
while. If others made alternate arrangements, I have no concerns or
problems with that.

In the past, I always released my tools under the GPL. After some bad
experiences, I no longer do so by default. But, at my discretion, I am
happy to provide the sources to those that request it, so that they
can improve upon it, or do something different with it. I don't really
have any strong attachment to these small tools.

[Mod. note: ]

We allowed the post about questioning Devanagari vs. Roman script hoping we would get an on-point reply just so that we can move on. Ajit has provided such a reply.

Let us consider that part of the discussion closed. Thanks.

I am sure many of the list members appreciate such efforts. If you want to reiterate your appreciation, please do so off the list.

Further discussion or clarification regarding the software itself is welcome on the list.

Thanks Ajit for this excellent information. Does anyone know of
similar tools that might work with the ipad and the macbook air?

namaste,

For offline searches using the stardict files:
  • For the ipad, follow the iphone instructions. The "dictionary universal" app works well on both the iphone & ipad. This is what I use.
  • On windows / linux, you might use the "goldendict" app available from  http://goldendict.org/. I tried this on windows, and it works okay. You have to "unzip" the tar.gz file which is a little bit of a pain on windows. You can do it using the 7-zip app and opening the archive once to get the tar file, and then open the tar file again to get the folder.

Alternatively, google shows this stardict app for macOS:
