Namaste to all,

I would like to gather details of Kavyamala series of Sanskrit books published by Pandurang Jawaji, Nirnaya Sagar Press, Bombay in the first few decades of 20th century. It appears that there are at least 100 volumes of rare and previously unpublished Sanskrit books in this series. I could find some of them at the Digital Library of India. Is the complete list of books of this series available with anyone?

regards
shankara

I'm not sure about availability of digital copy of complete series. But, it was printed by chaukhamba in near past. It is available with them even now, I think.
I've also collected some copies from Dli.

Namaste,

Thanks for the info about Chaukhamba edition.

In fact, I was looking for a complete list of the titles in the Kavyamala series. Do you know if Chaukhamba published all the volumes separately or together?

Sunderji

Thanks for the info.

Ajithji,

There are nearly 100 books in this series. I have already searched DLI thoroughly. I could locate nearly 35 of them.
I am now looking for the list of the titles and not the "e-books".

Dear Shakar,
Kavay Mala series was published by Nirnaya Sagar Press (NSP) and not Chaukhamba.
Chaukhamba  Publishers have only published Kavmala Guchhka (in 14 volumes priced at around Rs. 1000)  and a few work published by NSP.   Most of Kavya Mala series and other NSP are available in on DLI site and archive.org.   To compile a list download any one book and look at the list of titles published which will be on backside of the cover pages.

As  NSP press is out of business for more than 50 years, to collect a copy of all their publications which runs to hundreds of titles may be an extremely difficult task

I would also be extremely grateful for any more information anyone comes across on either Nirnaya Sagar Press or the Kavyamala series.  I have one Kavyamala volume scan (from the DLI) which I can easily send to anyone who would like it.

On a more general note, I find it very difficult to get hold of books that are out of print (even from publishers who are still in business).
It would be wonderful if someone would re-publish some of these books many of which contain the only ever published copy of a text (in many cases the texts do of course exist in mss libraries, but mss are often very difficult to access and decipher for those who are not full time scholars).  If anyone ever hears of a publisher who is republishing these out of print books, especially the very rich NSP collection, please do let me know.

Thank you

A list of 11 titles are found in this site:

as I googled. The may be available in DLI or archive.org. Just google and you should get some titles from different books with titles.  Hope this will work. "Kavyamala Series"

In the above link there is one volume as Kavyamala Part II which is a collection 13 poems. May be a first volume be available in the same. There is no Series number.

No.1 should be here:

and No.14 is also available.

Hi Vimala

DLI is digital Library of India http://www.dli.ernet.in/. Please use dli Downloader to down load books. I have downloaded more than 70 books from KM series using this site and archive.org. Please also got to the site
sanskritdocuments.org/  it gives you all the sites where books can be downloaded. I have a personal digital library collection of over 2,000 Sanskrit and Indology books downloaded from these sources.

The answer  is who would pay for republication?

You are right on the secod part

NSP was very much alive during 80's when I was in Bombay. I visited their shop and picked up quite a few old inexpensive publications from them. Of course the shop was in a poor state and if I remeber right it was in Kalbadevi.Perhaps their calendar continues to be published.

You are correct here.
Not all are published by chaukhamba if the series went to count 100. chaukhamba has only 14 books of that series.

Namaste,

I came to know from Sunderji that there were 2 separate series named Kavyamala. One was a series of single books and the other was named "Kavyamala Guchchaka" - collection of smaller works (4 to 10 in each volume). The former are around 100 in number and the anthologies (guchchakas) are less than 20 (may be 14).

So, I assume that what Chaukhamba has published must be the Kavyamala Guchchakas series. I will be thankful if someone can confirm this or add any more info on this.

One more information regarding the availability of Kavyamala printed books. Sri Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Samskrita Vidyapeetha has published volume 1 to 14 of the Kavayamala anthology series (priced Rs. 1600/-) and most the books in Kavyamala books series at very cheap price. I checked again and talked with shankara.
Now, I can say that there were two series with same name.
First series had title kAvyamAlA too. It had only 14 volumes. These are now published by chaukhamba.
Second series had different titles, as kAvyAnushAsanam, etc. And these were 90+ in numbers. These are out of print now. We have some volumes from delhi university and dli.

Dear Sharnkar
What was originally published as
Kavyamala Guchchaka by NSP is 10 Volumes ( which account for more than 325 works) have been Re Published by Chaukhamba in 14 volumes with the title Kavayamala

Please note and do not be confused between Kavyamala Guchchakas which are different from Kavayamala Series both have a different numbering system.
Many of the books published under Kavyamala series have more than one edition not just reprints

NSP have also published several books outside Kavyamala series also which will not have a number

I hope this is clear enough

Great. Some more on Stavamala. Stavamala is an amazing work, full of poetical beauty (कलापक्ष) and Rasa (भावपक्ष). The Chitrakavya (चित्रकवित्वानि) section is mind-boggling. There are the two-consonant (द्व्यक्षरी) verses, single consonant (एकाक्षरी), the disc arrangement (चक्रबन्ध), serpent arrangement (सर्पबन्ध), lotus arrangement (पद्मबन्ध), palindrome (प्रतिलोम्यानुलोम्यसम), the zig-zag or course of the cow's urine arrangement (गोमूत्रिकाबन्ध), the palindrome from all sides (सर्वतोभद्र) and the maga-lotus arrangement (बृहत्पद्मबन्ध), all in praise of Krishna and Radha.

While the chitrakkavitva of Bharavi and Magha seem artificial even though poetically brilliant, the Bhava in the Rupa Gosavmin's Stavamala makes them eclipse the efforts of Bharavi and Magha.

Savour this

निनुन्नानोननं नूनं नानूनोन्नाननोऽनुनीः
नानेनानां निनुन्नेनं नानौन्नानानानो ननु

For the meaning, the best source is the the commentary by Jiva Gosvami, the son of Rupa Gosvami and also a shishya of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. (available in the PDF from Archive.org)

Rupa Gosvamin is indeed, वशीकृतशारद. In my opinion, he is the real poet-laureate of Bengal, and not Rabindranath Tagore. Tagore is great, but still in the league of mortal poets like Magha and Bharai, and nowhere near Rupa Gosvamin, who is in the league of immortal Sarasvatas Valmiki, Vyasa, Tulsidas, et cetera.

Namaste Shankara-mahodaya,
I am not able to see the three additional volumes that you note below on the archive.org page - or at least they don't appear in the 'books uploaded' list.  Have you uploaded them elsewhere?
Thank you
Venetia

Namaskara Shankara-mahodaya,
Thank you very much. I didn't realise that the Sanskrit eBook blog was run by you. It is a very useful resource.
Best,
Venetia
