Hello, I'm looking to demonstrate to my fifth grade students the best classical poetry from around the world. I'd like to include a Sanskrit poem, preferably short (OR possibly some short, famous section of a longer work.) I know almost nothing about Sanskrit poetry, but in my short amount of research I have found that Kalidasa's Megadhuta is very charming. I was thinking perhaps the opening verse of that poem. If only I could find the original Sanskrit typed out with transliteration and word-for-word translation.

Does anyone have a link or can type out such a poem? I'd like it to be a well known poem by a well known author, with original Sanskrit, a transliteration and a word-for-word translation. I have received suggestions on other forums, but non included the original Sanskrit.

Sanskrit is an important historical language and I think that its great poets should be more well known.

Why don't you use this one? It is from the Mahabharata, is deeply meaningful and yet simple enough for a 10 year old to grasp.

ahiṃsā paramo dharmastathāhiṃsā paro damaḥ
ahiṃsā paramaṃ dānamahiṃsā paramaṃ tapaḥ
ahiṃsā paramo yajñastathāhiṃsā paraṃ balam
ahiṃsā paramaṃ mitramahiṃsā paramaṃ sukham
ahiṃsā paramaṃ satyamahiṃsā paramaṃ śrutam
sarvayajñeṣu vā dānaṃ sarvatīrtheṣu cāplutam
sarvadānaphalaṃ vāpi naitat tulyam ahiṃsayā
ahiṃsrasya tapoऽkṣayyam ahiṃsro yajate sadā
ahiṃsraḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ yathā mātā yathā pitā
etat phalam ahiṃsāyā bhūyaśca kurupuṃgava
na hi śakyā guṇā vaktum iha varṣaśatairapi
~ Mahābhāratam
(Book 13, Chapter 117, verses 37 - 41)

Nonviolence is the supreme religion. It is the supreme self-restraint.
Nonviolence is the supreme donation and the supreme penance.
Nonviolence is the supreme worship and the supreme strength.
Nonviolence is the supreme friend and the supreme bliss.
Nonviolence is the supreme truth and the supreme teaching.
Donation is higher than all worship and greater than any pilgrimage.
But even the fruits of all the donation in the world cannot bear comparison with nonviolence.
He who practises nonviolence is the supreme votary.
He who practises nonviolence is constantly engaged in worship.
He who practises nonviolence is like the father and mother of all living beings.
O bull amongst the Kauravas, these are the fruits of nonviolence.
It is not possible, even in hundreds of years, to fully relate the virtues of nonviolence.

Sir,

It is commendable that you would like to include classical sanskrit poetry to your students. Kalidasa's Meghaduta is like the cream-filled topping of the ice cream that is Sanskrit.

Have you gone through these youtube playlists. They feature some of the best poetry in the range of Sanskrit literature. There is diversity, good selection of verses, transliteration and an explanation in lucid English. And it can be well studied and appreciated by your students on their own!

If you want to specifically show them a few poems, do consider the following -
Krishna KarNamRtam - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRbg5R8ZCaU&index=20&list=PLZ83joYJYmWS04JfXVCeaSdKEN5Zn7-kB (contains a verse in the natural dialogue dictum)

Best!
