Part 1: Construction of the Sacred Altar (Vedi) for Rain Rituals
To execute the Kārīrī Iṣṭi or other Vedic rain-inducing rituals (Vṛṣṭi Yajñas), the sacrificial ground and altar must be precisely configured according to the Śulbasūtras (ancient structural manuals). A specific requirement for rain ceremonies is that the sacrificial enclosure must be completely swept and purified with water, and the Vedi (altar) is structured with local natural clay and water, overlaid with green Kusha grass to visually simulate a rain-pregnant land.
The foundational rule requires using clean earth and specific spatial arrangements without structural alterations:
  • Sanskrit Verse (Kātyāyana Śulbasūtra 1.2):
    चतुरश्रा वेदिर्भवति। भूमिभागं विमीय दक्षिणप्रवणं प्रागुदक्प्रवणं वा।
    दर्भैरास्तीर्य चषालैः प्रच्छादयेत् ॥
(Caturaśrā vedirbhavati | Bhūmibhāgaṁ vimīya dakṣiṇapravaṇaṁ prāgudakpravaṇaṁ vā | Darbhairāstīrya caṣālaiḥ pracchādayet)
  • English Translation:
"The sacrificial altar must be mathematically measured and shaped as a perfect square or prescribed rectangle. The designated plot of land must gently slope toward the east or north-east. It must be thickly strewn with fresh Kusha grass (Darbha) and covered protectively to house the ritual vessels."

Part 2: The Cosmic Cloud Classifications
Ancient Sanskrit meteorology does not view clouds as random vapor, but classifies them into four cosmic types based on their generative power and density. In classical texts like the Puranas and referenced throughout the Bṛhatsaṁhitā, these four groups dictate what kind of precipitation the earth will receive.
  • Sanskrit Verse Framework:
    आवर्तो वै संवर्तश्च पुस्कला आवर्तकस्तथा ।
    चतुर्विधाः समाख्याता मेघा वारिप्रदायिनः ॥
(Āvarto vai saṁvartaśca puṣkalā āvartakastathā | Caturvidhāḥ samākhyātā meghā vāri-pradāyinaḥ)
  • English Translation:
"The water-yielding clouds are declared to be of four primary classifications: ĀvartaSaṁvartaPuṣkala, and Āvartaka."
The Operational Profile of the Four Clouds:

1. Āvarta
  • Nature & Characteristics: Highly localized, dense, vortex-driven cloud cells.
  • Resulting Rainfall Pattern: Restricts its rain safely to specific fields or localized regions.
2. Saṁvarta
  • Nature & Characteristics: Massive, dark, heavy-laden storm clouds.
  • Resulting Rainfall Pattern: Brings vast, torrential, and widespread downpours across entire empires.
3. Puṣkala
  • Nature & Characteristics: High-altitude, expansive, bright-rimmed clouds.
  • Resulting Rainfall Pattern: Delivers gentle, continuous rain that perfectly satisfies agriculture without flooding.
4. Droṇa
  • Nature & Characteristics: Deep, moisture-saturated, reservoir-like clouds.
  • Resulting Rainfall Pattern: Functions like an inverted pot, dumping massive amounts of water in short durations.
The ancient Matsya Purāṇa and Bṛhatsaṁhitā outline four traditional cloud types (Meghas). These include Āvarta, a localized vortex cloud that pours rain over a single circular area; Saṁvarta, a cataclysmic storm cloud capable of submerging the world during dissolution; Puṣkala, an expansive and gentle rain cloud that fosters agricultural growth; and Droṇa, a reservoir-like cloud shaped like an inverted pot that delivers heavy, unbroken streams of rainfall.

Agni, showerer (of benefits), you who are the Lord, you alone among the gods pervade all living beings; and you give the sacrificer all the objects (phalāni) for which he prays

“Meet together, talk together, let your minds apprehend alike; in like manner as the ancient gods concurring accepted their portion of the sacrifice.”

“Common be the prayer of these (assembled worshippers), common be the acquisition, common the purpose, associated be the desire. I repeat for you a common prayer, I offer for you with a common oblation.”

“Common, (worshippers), be your intention; common be (the wishes of) your hearts; common be your thoughts, so that there may be thorough union among you.”
