Once you cross 40 years of age eyesight drops and one needs a spectacle to read. In tamil it is commonly called as Saaleswaram...
I split the word as Saala & Izvar but in sanskrit dictionary sAlA means something else & not related to eye sight.

Is this a Sanskrit word?

thanks

In all probability it would be difficult to find a proper Sanskrit word for spectacles because the period during which Sanskrit was in active use - say till the 13 century - spectacles were not known in India or in Europe.  Words like उपनेत्र that one sometimes meets in writings in Indian languages are recent constructs.

The Marathi word for 'spectacles' is चाळिशी.  It is an old word and has now fallen into disuse.  It was coined from the fact that a person starts feeling the need for spectacles around the age of 40, or चाळीस.

It seems the same word is used in Tamil also with Tamil pronunciation. In Kannada also it is used. No Sanskrit word!

The Telugu word for the drop in reading sight after 40 is chatvaaram. Similar to chaalees of north Indian languages. But in Marathi and hindi the word seems to have become synonymous with spectacles. This did not happen for the word chatvaaram in Telugu.

I know the word sulochana for spectacles in Kannada.

saaleswaram is interesting.

Is it a place name? A place which was known for making these spectacles? Just guessing.

Thanks a lot Arvind Kolhatkar ji & others..
In tamil since one "ca" is used for other 4 "ca"s this confusion has come.
written as चा    and pronounced as सा and hence this confusion.

Nagaraj ji,
No sir it is not a place name or temple of Shiva..
