.setTextureName() isn't a method anymore!

A few days ago I was programming and eclipse made a suggestion. I hit OK without really looking at it, and next thing I new, eclipse had updated to version 8. It made me install forge 8 instead of 7, and then everything seemed to work. However, when I started to code my first item, an error popped up saying: "The method setTextureName(String) is undefined for the type ItemMaterial". I tried everything I could, but it won't work. I think that there is a new command for setting textures, but I have no idea what. Does anyone know how to set textures in the new update, or how to uninstall the update?

Hello,

The book is written for Minecraft 1.7. The version of Forge you have installed is for Minecraft 1.8. The last couple of weeks have been very busy for me and I haven't had much time to look at 1.8 in depth yet, but a lot has changed. For now, I suggest sticking with Minecraft 1.7.

I checked wuppy29.com but it was just too complicated and confusing for me to understand what he is wanting me to do. I still am having this problem.

For now, download Minecraft Forge for 1.7 and work with that. I am still working on a very extensive update guide for the book which will cover updating.

Shut up! Can you at least say how to do it in 1.8?

I was following the tutorial from the book to make the key Item and got this error. I managed to fix this following the instructions for updating 1.7 to 1.8:

Also used the suggest JSON Generator tool: http://www.wuppy29.com/minecraft/json-generator/

However, in it's defence the book clearly states at the beginning in the Setting Up Forge section that it was written against Forge for 1.7. I suspect that if we're getting stuck with 1.8 issues in Hour 4 then we're going to be in much worse trouble later in the book!

Another source of up-to-date 1.8 advice is the O'Reilly book Minecraft Modding with Forge by Arun Gupta and Aditya Gupta published in April 2015. This has tutorials showing the new JSON required for block and item textures, and the changes to the assets structure, however it's scope is much less than Wuppy's and only covers basic blocks, items, recipes, mob enhancements, commands, etc., and not the juicy interesting stuff like creating new entities!

Hello,

Thank you for purchasing my book.

When I wrote my book for 1.7 I knew that it would quickly get outdated. My plan was to write an update guide and add it to the informit download page. Unfortunately, the update to Minecraft 1.8 is so extremely big, that this document was near impossible to write. At the time I gave up on it, it was already more than 50 pages long and I had only just started on blocks. My editor contacted me recently if I was willing to write a second edition. I took this opportunity to make sure the second edition works with Minecraft 1.8 instead of 1.7. The chapters are all finished now and just have to be edited and reviewed.

Having a new book release somewhere in the future might not help you that much though. My website has three update tutorials. One on the setup & basics and then one for basic items and basic blocks. Those tutorials can be found here: http://www.wuppy29.com/minecraft/modding-tutorials/forge-modding-1-8/. If you have more complicated things you want to update to 1.8, you can check out my github: https://github.com/wuppy29/WuppyMods/tree/1.8. This contains a lot of code for pretty much everything in the book, updated to 1.8. If you want to know a certain thing, I can point you to some example code on here.

Kind Regards,
Jimmy Koene

Thanks for the update, Jimmy.

I think a new book or proper "Second Edition" for 1.8 is the only way forward. I'm a developer by profession and enjoy a bit of Minecraft with my son, who thinks it's uber-cool I can write mods. But Java and Eclipse aren't my native tools, and the Forge API is massive and not well documented, so it's always a case of finding examples on the internet (you'll be pleased to know that wuppy29.com is regularly in the results!)

I managed to scrape through converting 1.7 to 1.8 with your guides and others for the early chapters for blocks, etc., but the changes to how textures are done is too much without further documentation! I got it working, but it was copy'n'paste code from multiple sources which always feels like a hack until you understand what it's doing and why.

I will checkout (literally, I use git for work) your new code for 1.8. If you'd like any help with an external end-user review of the pre-release book I'd be more than happy to help.

Regards,

Peter Duerden aka Nedreud
