China backs Hun Sen’s son to succeed his father

Foreign Minister Wang Yi said China supports General Hun Manet, Hun Sen’s son, as the next Cambodian prime minister.

The message of support for Lieutenant General Hun Manet to become the next Cambodian leader was given by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi when he met Hun Sen at the Peace Palace in Phnom Penh on August 3, Cambodian media today led. said Mr. Kao Kim Hourn, minister in the cabinet of the Prime Minister of Cambodia.

“China will continue to strongly support the Cambodian leadership in the future, especially the succession of their successors,” said Kao Kim Hourn.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Hun Manet’s succession to Prime Minister Hun Sen was “the key to maintaining peace in Cambodia and ensuring the friendship and cooperation between Cambodia and China”, Kao Kim Hourn said.

China “continues to strongly support Cambodia’s domestic and foreign policies, as well as Cambodia’s long-term stance of safeguarding sovereignty, integrity and independence,” Foreign Minister Xi Jinping said.

In December 2021, the Central Committee of the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) announced its support for General Hun Manet as the future Cambodian prime ministerial candidate. General Hun Manet, 44, is a member of the CPP Standing Committee and leader of the party’s youth union.

General Hun Manet, the eldest son of Prime Minister Hun Sen, is the first Cambodian to graduate from the US West Point military academy. He is said to have made a significant contribution to the negotiation process with Thailand when the two countries’ armies clashed at the ancient temple site of Preah Vihear in 2008.

Hun Sen said on March 31 that Hun Manet is a reserve prime ministerial candidate in the 2023 election and could succeed him at any time. He insisted the decision was to prevent any problems after the 2023 election.
